About The Position

Position Summary... Walmart is looking for a Sr. Manager, Automation Engineering, Detailed Design to lead high-impact retrofit initiatives across our automation network. This is a visible role for someone who can step into an active program, identify opportunities for improvement in existing automated environments, and turn those opportunities into practical engineering solutions that sites can implement successfully. In this role, you will take ownership from problem identification through execution. You’ll synthesize field feedback, evaluate design and operational constraints, develop retrofit solutions, and build implementation plans that move ideas into action. You’ll also help ensure projects stay on track by managing documentation, budgets, contracts, purchase orders, and stakeholder communication throughout the lifecycle. This is an especially strong fit for an engineering leader who enjoys solving real-world problems in operating facilities, influencing across teams, and driving measurable improvements in complex automation systems. What You’ll Do Lead retrofit initiatives for existing automation systems, identifying improvement opportunities and translating them into practical, buildable engineering solutions. Partner with stakeholders across operations, engineering, vendors, and site teams to gather feedback, align on priorities, and define the right path forward. Develop implementation plans that clearly outline scope, sequencing, timing, resource needs, and execution risks. Drive projects from concept through completion, ensuring solutions are communicated clearly and implemented as intended in live operating environments. Evaluate automation layouts, equipment placement, interfaces, and real-world building constraints to ensure designs are operationally sound and scalable. Anticipate downstream issues early, solve problems before they impact execution, and make thoughtful tradeoff decisions when conditions change. Manage project timelines, budgets, contracts, and purchase orders with a high degree of organization and accountability. Maintain clear, thorough documentation so designs, decisions, progress updates, and implementation plans are easy for others to understand and act on. Create presentations and written materials that tell a clear story, support decision-making, and help leaders understand project status, risks, and recommendations. Coordinate with internal and external partners to ensure retrofit solutions are delivered effectively across multiple sites. Use data, operational input, and engineering judgment to improve system performance, design quality, and long-term reliability across the automation network. What You’ll Bring Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering. Experience in engineering, automation, retrofits, or project delivery within complex operating environments. Ability to identify problems in the field, synthesize stakeholder feedback, and develop effective engineering solutions that can be implemented in practice. Track record of leading cross-site improvement initiatives and managing work across concept development, planning, communication, and execution. Strong project leadership skills, including experience managing timelines, budgets, contracts, purchase orders, and program documentation. Strong communication skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional partners and create clear, compelling presentations for a range of audiences. Proven rigor in documentation, program tracking, and follow-through. Ability to balance technical design considerations with operational realities, business priorities, and real-world site constraints. Experience working with automation systems, facility design constraints, or retrofit programs is strongly preferred. Field experience is highly valued; internal candidates or those who have worked closely with live site operations will stand out.
