About The Position

The Management Intern for the Residence Hall Front Desks creates a welcoming and inclusive environment that helps to enhance student and community development. The MI is responsible for the supervision, management, and operations of the Residence Hall Front Desks in the area of assignment. Collaborating with other MIs, Community Directors, Area Directors and Associate Directors, the MI’s train and mentor their staff, to provide outstanding customer service, support student connection, safety and security within the community and offer residents a wide array of community resources. The MI is expected to role model leadership, and must possess a passion for working with undergraduate and graduate student students in a Residential Community setting. Due to the 24/7 nature of the position and the expectation for serving after-hours and on weekends in a rotation with other Residence Hall Front Desk MIs, living in an on-campus furnished apartment is a condition of this position. This is a 20 hour per week position, primary hours should be during business hours, with flexible days and hours based on community needs. The duration of employment for this position is based on the academic year. For this year, employment dates are approximately June 1, 2026, through May 30, 2027. An additional one-year extension may be offered contingent upon an annual review.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma and two-years (2) experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

  • Manage crisis situations and student behavioral issues in a professional and emotionally stable manner
  • Research, develop, implement, and assess programs
  • Supervise students and student staff
  • Communicate effectively to perform essential duties
  • Walk throughout campus for meetings or events, regardless of weather

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a customer service/leadership role
  • Previous experience providing service support in a residential environment such as a desk assistant, programming assistant, community assistant, or other similar position
  • Possess superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Supervision experience
  • Enrollment in a master’s or doctorate degree program in higher education, counseling, social justice, business, or other closely related field
  • Experience working in an on-call, after-hours setting

Responsibilities

  • Provide exceptional customer service to all residents, guests and community members
  • Recruit, interview, hire, train, and supervise student staff desk assistants
  • Participate and/or coordinate and troubleshoot the check-in/out process for residents at all points of each semester, and as directed by supervisors
  • Help manage keys as directed by University Housing staff, and direct supervisor
  • Perform weekly audits of keys, ISAAC access cards, and equipment to ensure that all procedures are performed correctly and maintained consistently by their Desk Assistant (DA) staff
  • Gain and maintain knowledge of hall, desk, and University Housing procedures and policies (key policies, room transfers, LARs, check-in/out procedures, etc.)
  • Implement, train and coordinate the necessary parts of all University Housing process, procedures and protocols as directed by other University Housing staff and direct supervisor
  • Document, educate and resolve situations using a performance improvement model
  • Complete all required ASU employee online trainings; hold Desk Assistant staff accountable for completing all required ASU employee online trainings in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the coordination and training of all new Desk Assistants and provide “refresher” training sessions for desk staff as needed and coordinated with direct supervisor
  • Create and manage Desk Schedule to ensure 24-hour coverage, during the academic year, and all break periods and cover shifts during outages
  • Extended work hours may be required during busier times of the year (check-in/check-out)
  • Assist in processing payroll by serving as a Department Time Administrator
  • Track payroll entries and document as established by University Housing; Facilitate monthly team staff meetings with entire DA staff team
  • Participate in planning for and execution of student connection experiences within the residential community
  • Assist Community Assistants, Community Directors, and all other University Housing staff during crisis situations
  • Understand and promote the values of the residential community within their hall
  • Promote ASU spirit, pride, and tradition at the residential hall front desks’
  • Create, monitor, and maintain online desk assistant training modules through CANVAS for desk assistant staff
  • Monitor desk communication trackers ensuring desk assistants staff are assisting community and guests in a timely manner
  • Serve on a duty rotation between 5pm-8am on weekdays and all day on weekends and University Holidays for residence hall MIs. MIs are required to be on-call and must arrange to fill gaps in the schedule if a Desk Assistant misses a shift or if the shift is left unfilled
  • Serve as a mandatory reporter as aligned through Title IX
  • Other duties as assigned
