This position operates mammography equipment and performs various mammography-related examinations to produce radiograph images for clinical screening and diagnostic purposes. The role ensures accurate body positioning and provides mammograms to women under direct supervision, implementing radiation safety standards and relevant policies. The technologist processes and evaluates the technical quality of images, and delivers care and support services to clients before, during, and after mammogram procedures, including explaining procedures and answering inquiries. A positive attitude, compassion, and acceptance of diversity are essential. The role involves maintaining records and updating history associated with mammography, and educating women on the importance of mammography in preventing breast cancer. A strong understanding of anatomy, pathology, physiology, and medical terminology is required, along with maintaining continuing education credits. Facility sites may expand job responsibilities to include on-call rotation nights, weekends, and holidays, performing diagnostic radiology procedures, basic diagnostic radiology tasks, and awareness of general radiology protocols. Additional duties may include mobile imaging, electrocardiogram (EKG), cardiac monitor placement, and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) procedures.
