About The Position

The Town of Vienna Street Maintenance Division is seeking a Maintenance Worker I, II, or III. This position involves performing a variety of manual maintenance duties to preserve and improve the safety, cleanliness, appearance, and appeal of the Town by maintaining, cleaning, repairing, constructing, and installing the Town's asphalt, concrete, and other infrastructure. The specific duties depend on the work unit assignment. The work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, or indoors depending on the assignment, with exposure to noise, dust, and traffic. This role requires extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, lifting heavy objects, and operating equipment. This job can prepare an incumbent for career progression by gaining additional, more complex skills. The position works under general supervision, developing work methods and sequences.

Requirements

  • Maintenance Worker I: Requires High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Maintenance Worker I: Requires three months manual labor, relevant equipment operation or closely related experience.
  • Maintenance Worker II: Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Maintenance Worker II: Requires one-year relevant equipment operation, facility maintenance or closely related experience.
  • Maintenance Worker III: Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Maintenance Worker III: Requires three years large and heavy equipment operation, building maintenance or other closely related experience.
  • Maintenance Worker I & II: Valid State driver's license.
  • Maintenance Worker III: Valid State Commercial Driver's License (CDL) (Class B) with N endorsement, or ability to obtain endorsement within six months of employment.
  • Must be competent using software and tablets for email and record-keeping.
  • Responsible for performing updates and inputs to Town's maintenance management system concerning time log, equipment and materials used for maintenance, repair or replacement and the associated utility asset identification.
  • Interprets map documents, diagrams, sketches, technical manuals and uses associate numbering systems for utility assets, and is also able to understand various plan drawings.
  • Uses addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and/or calculates ratios, rates and percentages.
  • Reads routine sentences, instructions, regulations, procedures or work orders; writes routine sentences and completes routine job forms and incident reports, by hand or electronically; speaks routine sentences using proper grammar.
  • Has the ability to communicate using verbal, handwritten, and electronic messages.
  • Responsible for short to moderate range goals, planning and methodologies.
  • Performs semi-skilled work involving set procedures and rules, but with frequent problems; requires normal attention with short periods of concentration for accurate results or occasional exposure to unusual pressure.
  • Performs heavy work that involves constantly lifting, shoveling, and carrying up to 50 pounds on a regular and recurring basis and exerting up to 70 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
  • Leads or handles machines, tools, equipment or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.
  • Work is performed outdoors in all types of weather conditions, or indoors depending on individual work assignments.
  • Work environment includes exposure to noise, dust and traffic with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, lifting heavy objects and operating equipment.
  • Requires responsibility for the safety and health of others.
  • All new employees must satisfactorily complete a background check.
  • A conditional offer of employment may then be made contingent upon the successful completion of a physical exam that includes drug testing.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of concrete masonry work; forms, pours, and finishes concrete to repair curbs, sidewalks, driveway aprons, catch basins, and handicap ramps.
  • Hauls and disposes of broken concrete.
  • Performs brick work repairs and maintains all existing brick work.
  • Cleans brick work by water jet power washer and muriatic acid.
  • Makes repairs to Town buildings by performing carpentry, electrical, and plumbing work.
  • Replaces trim work, installs doors and frames, and replaces broken glass in windows.
  • Hangs and paints drywall; repairs and replaces locks; replaces floor and ceiling tiles.
  • Works with crew to remove leaves from the curbside.
  • Uses tandem and single-axle dump trucks for snow removal.
  • Delivers leaf mulch to residences and out-of-town facilities.
  • Loads trucks using a front-end loader and hauls loads to various disposal facilities.
  • Removes trash and brush throughout the year in parks, public facilities, and along the business district.
  • Deploys traffic control devices and is exposed to traffic conditions, noise, grease, mists, and dust.
  • Enters and works in confined space environments, using personal protective equipment with operating limits of 310 lbs.
  • Assists with snow removal on a seasonal basis.
  • Coordinates and confirms utility mark-off prior to excavation.
  • Operates excavation equipment, compaction equipment, water system valve maintenance trailer, associated trucks and vehicles, paving equipment, utility location equipment, and leak detection devices.
  • Assists the asphalt crew in laying and forming asphalt; lays new asphalt on old water breaks.
  • Follows AWWA procedures for disinfection of materials used in water system repair and replacement.
  • Repairs, rebuilds, cleans, and maintains storm drains and catch basins.
  • Designs, fabricates, and installs a variety of street and traffic signs.
  • Operates large and heavy equipment, such as a single-axle dump truck for snow and ice removal.
  • Operates leaf machine and drives a truck to remove leaves from the curbside.
  • Operates street sweeper to clean all streets throughout spring and summer months.
  • Operates sanitation truck to collect trash, yard waste, and recyclables.
  • Monitors crew to ensure safety.
  • Empties dumpsters and travels to the proper disposal facility.
  • Maintains trucks by washing and greasing.
  • Operates a backhoe.
  • Uses a variety of tools and power tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches, sockets, drills, powered grinders, jigsaws, rakes, shovels, and pole diggers.
  • Operates pole and chain saws.
  • Collects trash and yard waste, picks up leaves and brush, empties containers and dumpsters.
  • Receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as identifying what is in each can.
  • Refers to rules and regulations, policy and procedure manuals, codes/laws/regulations, publications, and reference texts.
  • Operates a variety of vehicles and equipment such as non-commercial vehicles.
  • Uses a variety of tools such as brooms and shovels and a variety of supplies including safety supplies.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the town manager, supervisor, co-workers, the general public, and occasionally public officials.
  • Sets up and tears down after town events.
  • Fixes/repairs holiday lights; strings lights on trees and light poles using a bucket truck.
  • Installs street and traffic signs.
  • Loads and unloads trucks.
  • Flags traffic in work areas for workers and drivers.
  • Reports to work for snow or other emergencies as assigned.
  • Paints public buildings.
  • Performs related work as assigned including job layout planning.
  • Maintains positive relations with co-workers and customers.
