About The Position

The purpose of this classification is to perform unskilled to semi-skilled work to maintain facilities, grounds, transfer station equipment, and rights-of-way in the City. This role involves performing maintenance tasks in various areas such as golf course, transfer station, parks, streets, cemetery, convention center, and recreation. The position requires adherence to safety procedures, operation of City vehicles, and communication with various stakeholders. Specific duties may vary depending on the division assignment, including solid waste, parks, cemetery, convention center, recreation, or beach litter removal.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Some experience in landscape maintenance and manual labor work
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license or commercial driver’s license (CDL) including appropriate endorsements

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance tasks in one of the following areas: golf course, transfer station, parks, streets, cemetery, convention center, and recreation.
  • Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear.
  • Performs a variety of street maintenance duties; pours concrete; patches holes; paves, shovels and rolls asphalt; repairs and installs curbs; repairs and installs City sidewalks; repairs and cleans storm drainage systems; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from sidewalks and rights of way; builds drain boxes; rebuilds shoulders on rights of way; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, gravel or mulch.
  • Performs a variety of landscaping duties; mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; sprays weed killer and fertilizer; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; spreads grass seed; grooms ball fields, etc.
  • Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.
  • Operates a City vehicle; conducts pre- and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; loads and unloads materials, supplies and equipment as needed to complete assigned projects; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage and other associated documentation.
  • Responds to complaints and questions related to street maintenance issues and activities; provides information; researches problems, and initiates problem resolution.
  • Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Operates a variety of varied purpose equipment and tools in road, right-of-way, landscape, and utility maintenance; operates a commercial-grade lawn mower, weed eater, chain saw, blower, shovel, rakes, pitchfork, pry bar or other equipment.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of light-grade trucks and City vehicles.
  • Operates refuse packing units.
  • Guides vehicle to proper dumping site.
  • Drives trailers into pit for compacting.
  • Calls in trash weights.
  • Opens doors for roll-off drivers.
  • Installs and maintains new parks; installs playground equipment.
  • Services irrigation systems.
  • Installs, removes, or repairs fencing.
  • Performs general building maintenance; cleans scrubs and waxes floors; cleans and shampoos carpets; cleans windows, restrooms, parking lot grounds, and offices.
  • Shovels snow.
  • Repairs irrigation systems.
  • Helps crew leader mark graves; digs graves.
  • Cleans and scrubs convention center floors, bleachers, and chairs; waxes floors; cleans and shampoos carpets; cleans windows, restrooms, escalator, compactor area, marquee signs, parking lot grounds, and offices.
  • Sets up exhibit booths; sets up barricades for crowd control; sets up basketball court; sets up ballrooms and meeting rooms.
  • Maintains reflecting pool, cement pond, and fountain.
  • Makes repairs to bathroom plumbing; unclogs toilets; stocks supplies.
  • Moves air wall panels; positions bleachers; places guard rails on bleachers; builds stages.
  • Paints surfaces; builds shelves; patches walls.
  • Patches and cleans roof drains.
  • Exterminates insects and rodents.
  • Maintains athletic fields; paints fields for a variety of sporting events; installs and takes up anchors, pitching rubbers, and home plate; builds pitching mounds and bullpens.
  • Repairs bleachers, benches and related equipment.
  • Removes debris/litter from the beach and beach areas.
  • Empties cans at the walkovers.
  • Transports the collected debris to the proper dumping site.
  • Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary.
  • Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after natural disasters as necessary.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
