About The Position

The Litter Picker supports daily landfill operations at the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill (Puʻuanahulu) by maintaining clean, safe, and compliant working areas. This position is responsible for collecting windblown litter, removing debris, supporting site housekeeping, and assisting equipment operators and landfill staff in maintaining environmental and operational standards required by County, State, and Federal regulations.

Requirements

  • Ability to work safely around heavy equipment, including compactors, dozers, water trucks, and haul vehicles.
  • Ability to use hand tools and light equipment such as grabbers, rakes, brooms, and portable blowers.
  • Ability to follow all County safety protocols, including PPE requirements, heat-stress procedures, and traffic-control rules.

Responsibilities

  • Collect windblown litter along the working face, access roads, perimeter fencing, drainage ditches, and surrounding areas.
  • Patrol the landfill boundary to identify and retrieve litter carried by wind or vehicle traffic.
  • Install, maintain, and reposition litter control fencing and tarps as directed by supervisors.
  • Assist with daily site housekeeping, including clearing debris from public drop-off areas, scale house vicinity, and operational zones.
  • Support landfill compliance efforts by helping maintain clean stormwater channels, berms, and buffer zones.
  • Communicate hazards or unusual conditions (e.g., sharps, medical waste, dead animals, fire risks) to supervisors immediately.
  • Work safely around heavy equipment, including compactors, dozers, water trucks, and haul vehicles.
  • Use hand tools and light equipment such as grabbers, rakes, brooms, and portable blowers.
  • Assist with special cleanup projects, storm preparation, and post-storm debris removal.
  • Work as needed at other Solid Waste Facilities.
  • Follow all County safety protocols, including PPE requirements, heat-stress procedures, and traffic-control rules.
