The Maintenance Worker I/II performs skilled and semi-skilled maintenance activities in assigned City service areas, which may include facilities, parks, streets, vehicles, solid waste, wastewater, Fire Department, or Parks and Recreation. Duties include operating and maintaining tools, equipment, and vehicles; completing maintenance and repairs; following safety precautions; responding to emergencies and public inquiries; and attending safety and training sessions. Work assignments and duties vary by area. Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level, training class and performs routine, less complex duties with immediate supervision. The positions are flexibly staffed; advancement from Worker I to Worker II is typical, while outside hires at Level II generally have prior experience. Depending on assignment, duties may include building and janitorial maintenance; grounds, turf, tree, and park care; facility and playground repairs; vehicle and equipment servicing; refuse collection and street sweeping; wastewater system and treatment facility operations; welding and fabrication; and maintenance of Fire Department equipment and facilities. Work may require any shift, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as well as after-hours call-outs. The work may take place in field settings or wastewater treatment plants and may involve exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, heat, cold, waste, infectious materials, inclement weather, water, and confined spaces. Physical duties may include lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, and prolonged walking or standing.
