About The Position

The Maintenance Worker for the Refuse Disposal Division is responsible for the maintenance of city landfill and transfer station. This role involves a variety of tasks to ensure the proper functioning and upkeep of these facilities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Six months of experience in grounds maintenance or landfill maintenance
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools necessary to perform essential duties
  • Knowledge of job-related safety hazards and precautionary methods
  • Skill in establishing priorities and organizing work
  • Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment
  • Skill in oral communication

Responsibilities

  • Performs maintenance functions such as mowing grass, canals, stormwater ditches, and slopes.
  • Provides landscaping services for Dean Forest Landfill, Old Administrative Building and Bacon Park Transfer Station.
  • Trims weeds, installs fences, and removes fallen trees.
  • Picks up litter across both Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station.
  • Fuels and lubricates equipment.
  • Operates large equipment, including dust control water truck, tractors, and bucket loader.
  • Installs and maintains erosion measures such as planting seed and installing protective cover.
  • Installs rock dams, silt fences, and drainpipes.
  • Operates small gas- and diesel-powered equipment, including hydroseeder, bush hog, dump truck, service truck, bucket loader, farm tractor with batwing, and pick-up truck.
  • Performs general housekeeping near Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station residential drop-off area.
  • Loads 53 ft trailer with scrap tires on a two-to-three-day frequency.
  • Uses hand and power tools.
  • Washes vehicles, fuels and services equipment, and sprays roads.
  • Screens customers to ensure residency, provides referrals for non-residents and commercial customers, and maintains customer sign-in log.
  • Performs random load inspections at inert landfill and residential drop-off area at Dean Forest Landfill.
  • Monitors and inspects refuse to ensure it is acceptable and contains no hazardous materials.
  • Coordinates traffic flow and directs customers to the appropriate disposal container.
  • Ensures refuse is placed in proper container.
  • Coordinates refuse container activities with department roll-off truck operators.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
