About The Position

Under the direction of the Streets Superintendent, this individual is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the maintenance, operation, and other tasks assigned in the Streets Division. Snow removal is a requirement of this position. Duties include performing maintenance, repair, and construction work in a variety of public works, water, streets wastewater, storm water and related maintenance activities. Specific work assignments are provided on a daily basis and may be rotated. Work can include the operation of motorized equipment and the expenditure of heavy physical labor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Supplemented by specialized or technical training or shop courses.
  • Considerable experience performing maintenance, restoration, or repair work, or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Knowledge and skill in the use of common hand tools, materials, and standard equipment used in maintenance, repair, and construction work.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, and materials used in maintenance, repair, and construction of public streets and tree/brush removal.
  • Knowledge of the safety precautions and hazards of the work.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
  • Ability to learn a broad range of operational skills.
  • Ability to effectively solve problems and exercise good judgment.
  • Outstanding organizational and time management skills.
  • Detail oriented with multi-tasking capabilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess, or have the ability to attain within 6 months of hire date, a valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B driver's license with No Restrictions (Full Air Brakes).

  • Previous experience with snow removal.
  • Previous experience with aerial lift equipment.
  • Previous forestry work.
