About The Position

Under general supervision, performs semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of Town streets, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and other related infrastructure. This is an entry-level position within the Streets Division of Public Works, where incumbents typically have little to no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning tasks. The role is distinguished from an Equipment Operator by performing a less comprehensive range of duties related to the operation of medium and heavy equipment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, AND one year of general road construction or maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess State of Arizona Driver's license.
  • Commercial Driver’s license may be required.
  • Flagger certification for highway work zones is required within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of Town policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and rules for operating vehicles and equipment in construction zones.
  • Knowledge of operation, maintenance, and repair standards for motorized equipment and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Town safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of basic tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance.
  • Skill in closely following verbal and written instructions and procedures.
  • Skill in safe and efficient operation and maintenance of tools and motorized equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures.
  • Skill in making routine operating adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment.
  • Skill in identifying mechanical problems.
  • Skill in following and maintaining safety standards.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers.

Responsibilities

  • Performs general road maintenance including flagging traffic, mowing, asphalt surface repairs, patching holes, sawing pavement, concrete repair and pouring, clearing brush and trees, vegetation control, sweeping, routing and sealing road cracks, and removing dead animals and trash.
  • Constructs and paves roads and infrastructure; hauls materials, and transports vehicles and equipment to job sites; grades, waters and rolls gravel; sweeps and cleans roads as necessary; maintains infrastructure, drains and culverts.
  • Maintains truck logs, completes daily logs, reports, and maintenance records; cleans and performs routine maintenance on trucks and heavy equipment; identifies and reports mechanical problems.
  • Utilizes proper safety precautions and reports safety hazards, equipment problems, and emergency situations.
  • Controls ongoing work projects to ensure adherence to safety rules and regulations, and that the work zone and equipment are in safe operating condition.
  • Performs tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies.
  • Places and removes cones and traffic barricades to secure safety at work sites, and directs traffic when necessary.
  • Trims and cuts trees and shrubbery, removes tree trunks, operates high-lift, and shreds plant debris.
  • Performs snow cleanup activities, including operating a snowplow truck, spreading chemicals, and shoveling.
  • Performs activities related to installation and cleanup after special events, disasters, accidents, and other events.
  • Performs installation and repair of street signs and the layout and painting of pavement striping and marking.
  • Assists in cross-training work crews in proper work methods and safety procedures.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.
