About The Position

The Maintenance Worker (SWM/HAZ) performs unskilled and semiskilled manual labor in various areas of assigned responsibility for the Solid Waste Management division. The schedule for this full-time position includes working every Saturday with a rotating work week schedule, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of experience performing manual labor.
  • One (1) year experience using computers in a formal work or learning environment, preferred.
  • Ability to use effectively standard maintenance equipment and hand tools.
  • Ability to use personal protection equipment properly.
  • Requires ability to work outdoors under unpleasant conditions.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform assigned tasks under adverse conditions.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule.
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses: IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
  • Requires a combination of sitting, standing, and walking; frequent standing and walking.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, climbing, twisting, reaching above shoulders, and occasional kneeling, balancing and throwing.
  • The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, operating foot controls/levers, driving automotive equipment, working in darkness, operating a manual transmission and occasional typing.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check, pre-employment physical examination, and drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Forklift, Solid Waste Spotter, OSHA, and Safety training preferred.
  • One (1) year experience using computers in a formal work or learning environment, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Accepts household hazardous waste and materials from citizens.
  • Conducts inventory of necessary items/ materials for household hazardous waste programs.
  • Takes part in household hazardous waste events and programs.
  • Sorts, segregates, and consolidates hazardous waste by hazards class and provides customer service.
  • Serves as the solid waste spotter and works in the Landfill's Customer Service Area.
  • Performs other duties as required.
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency.
  • During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens.
  • Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
