About The Position

Supervises a large maintenance staff consisting of maintenance workers electricians plumbers laborers carpenters having a representative grade of NA-9 through subordinate leaders engaged in all phases of NEX maintenance and repair. This role involves supervising and directing the activities of subordinate maintenance workers in a variety of tasks including electrical wiring, appliance repair, painting, carpentry, locksmith duties, and maintenance of utilities and flooring. The supervisor will also be responsible for maintaining a fleet of material handling equipment (forklifts, order pickers, reach trucks, etc.), diesel delivery trucks and trailers, and distribution equipment including conveyors and industrial types.

Requirements

  • One year of experience that provided knowledge of general maintenance practices involving the upkeep of buildings, grounds, fixtures, equipment, etc.
  • Five years of full performance maintenance work involving a variety of trade practices associated with occupations such as carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting, air conditioning and refrigeration, plumbing, masonry work, etc.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Ability to frequently lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • One year of high school education may be substituted for 3 months of general experience up to a High School Diploma or GED for one year of general experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and directs the activities of subordinate maintenance workers engaged in performing a variety of work assignments relative to the maintenance and repair of Navy Exchange facilities areas and equipment.
  • Installs electrical wiring, repairs and replaces various electrical appliances.
  • Performs painting of interior walls, furniture, shelves, and display cases.
  • Performs carpentry work such as constructing additions to existing buildings, making boxes, and hanging doors.
  • Performs locksmith duties such as opening safes, re-setting combinations, assigning locks, and making keys.
  • Modifies, maintains, and repairs utilities, water heaters, valves, pumps, supply and disposal systems, and equipment.
  • Installs, alters, and repairs carpet and linoleum.
  • Establishes work schedules, ensuring sufficient work for the crew, and maintains time cards.
  • Approves or disapproves leave requests and prepares work performance reviews.
  • Reviews applications of new applicants, interviews, and makes selections.
  • Determines work priorities, checks work in progress and upon completion for compliance with procedures, methods, and deadlines.
  • Answers workers' questions regarding procedures, policies, and directives.
  • Keeps supervisor informed on the status and progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations.
  • Supervises and evaluates subordinates, reviews work assignments, and determines work priorities.
  • Carries out Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and communicates support for these policies to subordinates.
  • Ensures equality in determining qualifications and recommends selections, assignments, training, promotions, awards, and discipline.
  • Ensures that minorities and women are considered for training opportunities.
  • Prepares drawings and sketches of proposed changes to existing structures prior to performing carpentry or electrical work.
  • Estimates material and labor costs for major projects.
  • Prepares daily worksheets including work assignments, hours spent, and materials used.
  • May be responsible for the preparation and processing of purchase orders for parts and accessories.
  • Obtains supply items for electrical, carpentry, plumbing, and painting work.
  • Contacts vendors by telephone to obtain prices and maintains a listing of local vendors and manufacturers.
  • Conducts periodic inventory of supplies and equipment, determines discrepancies, and advises supervisor for corrective action.
  • Accounts for all merchandise in stock and transferred items.
  • Ensures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed, including material handling equipment capacities and proper tool usage and maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Maintains a fleet of material handling equipment (forklifts, order pickers, reach trucks, etc.).
  • Maintains a fleet of diesel delivery trucks and trailers.
  • Maintains distribution equipment, including some conveyor and industrial type equipment.
