About The Position

Under general supervision, this position performs building maintenance and grounds maintenance tasks. Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in routine carpentry, ground maintenance and basic plumbing.
  • Knowledge of equipment, methods, and materials used in moderate levels of construction, i.e. building walls, hanging doors and windows.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of City practice, policy and procedures.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
  • Skill in planning and organizing.
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
  • Ability to operate power tools.
  • Ability to read and understand simple blueprints.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of custodial, building maintenance or construction work.
  • Experience may substitute for the education up to the maximum of four (4) years.
  • Texas Class C Operator's License.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.
  • Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds.
  • Work environment includes inside, and outside environmental conditions, extreme temperatures, and hazards associated with equipment operation including fumes, oils, gases and mists.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in commercial building maintenance and construction.
  • Experience in commercial door hardware installation, maintenance and repair.
  • Experience in fabrication and installation of cabinets, shelving and counter tops.
  • Experience in in wood and metal structural framing.
  • Experience in installation and replacement of wood and metal doors and casings.
  • Fork Lift 29 CFR 1910.178 certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Aerial Lifts 29 CFR 1926.453 certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • OSHA Construction Safety and Health 29 CFR 1910 certification or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Performs minor repairs to tables, chairs, cabinets, etc.
  • Installs or replaces floor and ceramic tiles.
  • Repairs or replaces electric plugs and cords.
  • Drives vehicles as needed.
  • Moves furniture, file cabinets, equipment, etc. using hand dollies.
  • Performs service on pumps, air handlers, cooling towers, etc.
  • Repacks, changes oil/filters, lubricates, etc.
  • Operates drills, buffers, grinders, sanders, etc.
  • Operate various power saws, i.e., radial arm, skill, etc.
  • Operates acetylene cutting torch, welder, etc.
  • Performs basic plumbing installations/repairs i.e., install and repair faucets, unclog drains, replace valves, etc.
  • Measures using tapes, transits, levels, etc.
  • Performs semi-skilled carpentry work in the construction and repair of walls, ceilings, etc.
  • Reads profiles/blueprints.
