About The Position

The City of Fountain Valley is seeking an experienced Maintenance Worker to join their Facilities Maintenance team. This journey-level position works under the direction of the Facilities Foreman to maintain the buildings and infrastructure that serve the community, including City Hall, Police Department, Fire stations, Senior Center, recreation facilities, and other municipal properties. The role involves performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and improvements on a variety of municipal buildings and their systems, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, painting, lighting, doors, and hardware. The position requires diagnosing maintenance issues, recommending repair solutions, coordinating with outside contractors, inspecting facilities, assisting team members across different maintenance disciplines, and responding to emergencies. The ideal candidate is a skilled facilities maintenance professional with strong journey-level knowledge, expertise in electrical and HVAC systems, comfort with multiple trades, problem-solving abilities, pride in workmanship, effective communication skills, flexibility, adaptability, and a commitment to exceptional service.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Two years related experience in facilities maintenance that may include carpentry, painting, plumbing, metal fabrication, welding, heating, air conditioning and electrical work, preferably in a municipal setting or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities.
• A valid California Class C driver’s license is required.
• Must be available for standby duty and is subject to periodic call-out during off-time hours to assist in emergency repairs.

Nice To Haves

• Vocational/technical coursework in facilities/building maintenance/repair is highly desirable.
• Commercial driver’s license is highly desirable.
• Building Operator certification is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, and improvements on a wide variety of municipal buildings and building systems.
• Maintain electrical, HVAC, plumbing, carpentry, painting, lighting, doors, hardware, and other building components.
• Diagnose maintenance issues and recommend effective repair solutions.
• Coordinate and work collaboratively with outside contractors on specialized repair and construction projects.
• Inspect facilities to identify maintenance needs and help ensure safe, functional, and welcoming public buildings.
• Assist fellow team members across all maintenance disciplines, supporting a collaborative and cross-trained work environment.
• Respond to maintenance emergencies and prioritize work to minimize disruptions to City operations.
• Be available for standby duty and subject to periodic call-out during off-time hours to assist in emergency repairs.
