About The Position

This is the entry-level position in the Public Works Maintenance series. Positions in this class typically have little directly related work experience. The I class is distinguished from the II level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the II level. Incumbents work under close supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned. The role involves performing a variety of construction, maintenance, and repair duties related to the City’s streets, sidewalks, right-of-ways, buildings, and infrastructure.

Requirements

Must be age eighteen (18) by date of application.
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver license.
Ability to obtain California Class A driver license within six (6) months of hire date.
Knowledge of methods, techniques, tools, and operational characteristics of mechanical equipment used in maintenance of City streets, buildings, and right-of-ways, depending on assignment.
Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Knowledge of English usage including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Ability to perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
Ability to identify safety hazards.
Ability to safely operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.

Responsibilities

Perform construction, maintenance, and repair activities designed to provide quality streets, sidewalks, traffic control systems, and related City public facilities.
Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including applying reclamite, emulsion, crack filler, hot mix and cold mix overlays to reconstruct and repair streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, and gutters; apply striping, delineators, signs, street lights, and other traffic control devices.
Perform routine carpentry, plumbing, painting, and repair of City facilities, buildings, and infrastructure.
Remove graffiti from City buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.
Clean up debris from City property, parking lots, walkways, ditches, alleys, streets, and storm drains.
Assist in work required to maintain the City in clean conditions.
Maintain records related to the inspection and repair of City buildings, facilities, and infrastructure.
Operate and maintain City vehicles and heavy equipment, i.e., tractors, loaders, and various power tools.
Respond to after-hour call-outs as assigned.
Effectively use computer systems, software applications, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
