About The Position

The City of Pittsburg seeks to fill one vacancy for MAINTENANCE WORKER I - Parks & Landscape Division in the Public Works Department. Join our Parks & Landscape Division which plays a vital role in the maintenance of our parks, landscape strips, medians, trees, swimming pools, fountains, and other recreational facilities. The Maintenance Worker I in the City's Parks & Landscape Division performs a wide variety of maintenance, repair, and construction work; provides efficient and timely response to emergency operations as assigned; provides efficient customer service and serves as a positive and cooperative team member.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of applicable experience in landscape construction, maintenance, gardening, or related work.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license
  • Knowledge of: Basic practices, techniques and materials used in the maintenance, construction, mechanics, and repair of one or more of the following functional areas of responsibility: parks, landscape strips/medians, trees, swimming pools, fountains and related City recreational facilities/operations; safety requirements for the operation of trucks and other hand, power, and motorized equipment utilized in performing the assigned duties; basic occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Ability to: Understand and carry out a variety of oral and written instructions; learn the City's operations, policies and procedures as they relate to assigned duties; learn the operations and maintenance of City's various parks, gardens, and other environmental service facilities; learn to operate a variety of light to heavy motorized and power equipment utilized in the maintenance, repair, and construction of the City's public works operations and facilities in a safe and effective manner; operate a variety of hand powered maintenance and construction equipment in a safe and effective manner; perform routine mathematical calculations including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; maintain routine records and logs; communicate orally and in writing in an effective and tactful manner; provide courteous and positive customer service; perform assigned duties to include heavy and continuous physical labor in a safe and effective manner for self and others.; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.

Responsibilities

  • Learns and performs a wide range of maintenance, repair, and construction activities on City parks, landscape strips/medians, trees, swimming pools, fountains and related City recreational facilities/operations.
  • Operates a variety of motorized, power, and hand-powered machines and equipment to include: dump truck, back hoe/front loader, jackhammer, tamper, compressor, arc welder, mower, concrete saw, auger or sand blasting machine, pick-up truck, shovels, rakes, picks, hoes, wrenches, edgers, drills and saws.
  • Performs preventative and routine maintenance on motorized and power equipment, notifies appropriate personnel regarding needed repairs and/or other operational problems.
  • Identifies a variety of safety/health hazards, as well as, public works facilities and systems in need of maintenance or repair; notifies appropriate party of potential problems to ensure a timely and effective response.
  • Responds to emergency calls on weekends, holidays, and evenings as assigned and according to primary and secondary call back lists.
  • May provide lead direction to seasonal employees.
  • Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff and the general public.
  • Learns to and waters, mows, and edges turf; renovates turf; aerating, seeding, thatching, removing and laying sod; prepares soil for planting or seeding; grading and adding soil amendments; plants, transplants, stakes, cultivates, prunes, and waters plants, flowers, shrubs and trees; identifies pests causing problems; selects the appropriate pest control methods and/or pesticide; mixes and applies pesticides in an appropriate and safe manner; repairs, replaces, installs, and modifies irrigation systems maintains required documentation.
  • Learns to and participates in the removal and pruning of trees; uses hand and chain saws, chippers, stump grinder, and aerial truck to cut up branches and remove tree trimmings and stumps.
  • Learns to and cleans a variety of non-planted City property/facilities such as walks, courts, play grounds, skateboard parks, pool decks, barbecue areas, and parking lots; sweeps, rakes, blows, hoses down, and shovel debris; loads and unloads trucks of refuse, trimmings, soil, sand, rock, and other materials; picks up litter, debris and empties refuse containers; Cleans rest rooms according to specified health and safety standards; scrubbing sinks, toilets, floors and walls; maintaining appropriate levels of toilet tissue, paper toweling, and soap; repairing and/or reporting leaks, property damage and/or plumbing problems; paints, repairs, and maintains a variety of park facilities and related equipment such as fencing, concrete play areas, walkways, and mow strips; replaces worn or broken parts; cleans up graffiti; may construct forms, mix and pour cement, and perform other masonry tasks.
  • Learns to and cleans and maintains City swimming pools and fountains according to specified health and safety standards; takes water samples and records readings; maintains appropriate chemical and temperature balance; cleans and vacuums; cleans and replaces filters; monitors timers and calibrates injectors; replaces and repairs gauges, and valves as necessary; maintains and repairs playground equipment and surrounding surface material; checks equipment to ensure it is safe on an on-going basis; initiates and follows-up on any action to be taken, documenting all activities; maintains City's softball fields; chalks field; sprays foul lines; screen drags and nail drags diamonds; levels infields; installs shadescreens; sets bases; maintains scoreboards and other electrical outlets.
  • Learns to and maintains, repairs, and installs irrigation systems; replaces/adjusts sprinkler heads; adjusts and/or reconfigures pipes and heads; designs new and/or modified systems; digs trenches and lays pipe; locates and repairs leaks.
