The Maintenance Trainee learns to work with plant personnel to improve equipment and process reliability and use plant resources efficiently and cost-effectively. The role develops a foundation in mechanical and electrical systems and maintenance reliability, preparing the trainee for advancement to Industrial Maintenance Technician. The trainee must demonstrate technical writing and verbal communication skills, and the ability to read and work from OEM technical manuals, P&IDs, and control schematics before advancement. The trainee must also learn to use company software, including the Enterprise Asset Management System (EAMS), and demonstrate satisfactory performance and knowledge in the program’s key areas while completing assigned formal education requirements. Performance and progress are reviewed through current on-the-job performance, completion of the Competency List, annual performance reviews tied to merit increases, and formal quarterly reviews. The trainee must make progress in the Development Program, earn a grade of “C” or better in each course, and meet expectations in performance reviews. Failure to progress may result in dismissal from the program. The trainee must attend at least two classes per semester and no more than nine credit hours per semester. Columbus MFG pays the trainee’s hourly wages while in class and covers tuition and books; travel mileage to and from school is the trainee’s responsibility. If employment ends for any reason within three years of completing the Industrial Automation and Machine Maintenance program, the trainee must refund 100% of covered costs, excluding wages. The trainee must also repay the costs of any class in which they do not earn a “C” or higher, through a one-time payment or authorized payroll deductions. Candidates are selected in order of precedence based on related work experience, completed courses in the Maintenance Craftsman Development curriculum or an equivalent, current job performance at Columbus MFG, and length of service when other criteria are equal. Related experience is preferred in electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and process systems, and may be assessed through formal maintenance and/or electrical testing administered by Columbus MFG.
