The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is hiring an entry-level Highway Technician to perform general maintenance on Indiana highways and interstates, helping keep roads clean and safe. Work includes removing trash and debris, filling potholes, maintaining drainage systems, plowing snow, and assisting with traffic control, particularly during emergency road closures. The role has opportunities for career advancement and requires mandatory overtime for emergency operations, including winter operations. This position is with INDOT's Elkhart Subdistrict, which includes units in Elkhart, LaGrange, and Warsaw. Applicants should indicate their preferred location. The position traditionally starts at $20.00 per hour, with pay potentially commensurate with education and work experience. Employees with the CDL and endorsements required by the district receive an additional $1 per hour. Employees without a CDL have 90 days to obtain the required CDL and endorsements; onsite training is provided by certified INDOT staff. Depending on assignment, additional Traffic Inventory Specialist duties may include maintaining, repairing, and installing traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings; receiving and recording materials and equipment; managing inventory and dispensing supplies; and using a computerized inventory control system. Workday attendance at assigned worksites is an essential function. Other duties may be assigned or changed as needed.
