The State of Indiana’s Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) is hiring an entry-level Highway Technician to perform general maintenance on Indiana highways and interstates, helping keep roads clean and safe. The role is based in INDOT’s Bluffton Subdistrict, which includes units in Gas City, Bluffton, and Monroe; applicants should indicate their preferred location. The position traditionally starts at $20.00 per hour, with pay potentially adjusted based on education and work experience. Employees with a current CDL and district-required endorsements, or who obtain them within 90 days of employment, earn an additional $1 per hour. CDL training is provided onsite by certified INDOT staff. Work includes routine highway and right-of-way maintenance, winter snow and ice removal, and emergency response activities. Mandatory overtime is required for emergency operations, including winter operations. Depending on assignment, duties may also include traffic-sign and pavement-marking work and traffic-inventory management. Workday attendance at assigned worksites is an essential function. The role may be used in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs; other duties may be assigned or changed.
