About The Position

The Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring students have safe, clean, attractive, and comfortable facilities. This role protects the investment in buildings, grounds, and equipment. The position involves a twelve-month contract (240 days) and requires a high school diploma or equivalent, a valid Alabama Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), and good physical and emotional health. Effective interpersonal communication skills are also necessary. The Board of Education may consider alternative qualifications. The role reports to the School Principal and the Construction/School Maintenance Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • A valid Alabama Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Good physical and emotional health including the ability to perform duties described in essential functions.
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting items up to 100 pounds, as well as, crawling, stooping, bending, climbing, working from ladders and roof tops in very hot and cold weather conditions.
  • May be required to work on scaffolds, stepladders, and high extension ladders or man-lift on occasion.
  • Use of hands for grasping, crawling, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Effective communication using speech, vision, hearing.
  • Required to work around moving machinery, exposure to marked changes in temperature and humidity, driving automotive equipment, and exposure to dust, fumes and gases.
  • Required to use manual tools and power equipment common to construction trades.
  • Required knowledge of safety awareness on construction, repair and emergency sites.

Responsibilities

  • Insure the cleanliness of school buildings, grounds, and equipment by supervising cleaning staff, inspecting for cleanliness, and performing cleaning operations when necessary.
  • Regulate heating, air conditioning, and other environmental control systems for economical usage of fuel.
  • Open and close the building as directed by the principal.
  • Perform basic maintenance and repair operations.
  • Maintain a daily work log and submit to Maintenance Supervisor monthly.
  • Report any maintenance problem requiring special assistance to the principal.
  • Establish and maintain a file and log on every item of mechanical equipment at the school.
  • Perform required preventive maintenance inspections.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a campus landscape and use plan.
  • Cut grass, prune, and remove trees and shrubs as required.
  • Perform duties in a manner that promotes good public relations.
  • Maintain a work area for storage of equipment and records.
  • Attend training sessions as scheduled by Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Maintain confidentiality of work-related issues, records, and school-related information.
  • Maintain proper and professional relationships with students and other employees.
  • Be familiar with and follow Board of Education policies.
  • Comply with local, state and federal regulations relative to maintenance regulations.
  • Be regular and punctual in attendance.
  • Perform other job-related duties that might be reasonably assigned by the principal or Maintenance Supervisor.
