About The Position

The Maintenance Technician supports the safe and reliable operation of facility spaces to ensure clean, functional, and welcoming environments for members, participants, staff, and visitors. The role helps maintain buildings and site-based facilities by keeping systems and areas in good working condition and addressing issues in a timely manner. It contributes to day-to-day safety and operational reliability across facilities and supports a positive experience for all users of the space. The position works as part of the team to help maintain consistent standards across all areas of operation.

Requirements

  • High School education or equivalent experience
  • Ability to obtain Water Treatment certification following commencement of employment, with organizational support provided, where applicable
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience in skilled trades and/or building maintenance, with experience and aptitude in multiple areas including: Electrical/plumbing, Operating engineering/pneumatics, Mechanical HVAC, Pool filtration/water chemistry
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment
  • Well-developed interpersonal and relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish rapport and communicate effectively with members, staff, and volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of courses offered as part of the Building Operator Certificate is an asset; willingness to increase knowledge and skills in this area
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR Level C is an asset
  • WHMIS and related health and safety training are an asset
  • Experience in pool operation is an asset; Pool Operator Certificate preferred (certification must be obtained within the first three months)
  • Computer skills are an asset, including computerized facility management applications

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair building equipment and respond to work orders, including painting, drywall, HVAC systems, fire safety systems, emergency equipment, lockers (where applicable), surface floors, and plumbing systems as required, and take appropriate action to rectify issues, including coordinating third-party contractors
  • Ensure the safe and continuous operation of pools and, where applicable, related aquatic and thermal amenities such as whirlpools, saunas, and steam rooms, along with associated equipment, chemical levels, and cleanliness in accordance with applicable legislation, and take appropriate action to address repair needs
  • Perform light-duty cleaning, project cleaning, general cleaning, and laundry services to support overall facility upkeep
  • Ensure the safety of all members/participants, property, and oneself by following established workplace health and safety practices and procedures. Adhere to all YMCA of Greater Toronto policies and Priority SAM cleaning and maintenance standards
  • Perform building and equipment repairs as required, and coordinate with contractors while providing supervision during repair activities
  • Respond to all emergencies across buildings and the site, report maintenance issues to the Facility Manager, and function as a building/site operator in the absence of the Facility Supervisor or Manager
  • Provide coverage for centre opening and closing and respond to requests for assistance during on-call duty periods as required
  • Assist with materials management related to building supplies by maintaining adequate inventory levels and ordering or replacing materials as necessary
  • Participate in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events as required
  • Implement and monitor appropriate policies and procedures to ensure safe and effective participation of members, participants, and volunteers
  • Support completion of Water Treatment certification following commencement of employment
  • Build relationships with members, participants, and visitors and seek opportunities to share the YMCA story while educating individuals and guests about the YMCA as a charity
  • Perform other assigned duties
