About The Position

The School Maintenance Technician is responsible for ensuring that all physical facilities, systems, and equipment at the school are maintained in good working condition. This role includes performing routine maintenance, repairs, and inspections of school buildings, grounds, and equipment to ensure a safe, clean, and functional environment for students, staff, and visitors. The technician will work closely with school administration and other maintenance staff to address immediate needs and long-term facility requirements.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
At least 2 years of experience in facilities maintenance or a related field, preferably in a school or institutional setting.
Experience with general repair, maintenance, and safety protocols for buildings and grounds.
Familiarity with the operation of tools, machinery, and equipment used in maintenance tasks.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
Ability to perform a variety of maintenance tasks, including basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and HVAC maintenance.
Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform work to a high standard of quality.
Good organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication skills for interacting with staff, administrators, and external contractors.
Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation if required to travel between school sites.

Nice To Haves

Certification in maintenance, facilities management, or a related field is a plus.

Responsibilities

Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on school buildings, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC, lighting, and other systems to ensure proper operation and safety.
Conduct general repairs, including fixing leaky faucets, repairing windows, patching walls, and painting, replacing filters, and addressing other minor issues as they arise.
Ensure all equipment, fixtures, and appliances are maintained in good working order, including classroom technology, gymnasium equipment, and kitchen appliances.
Assist in setting up and maintaining school events, such as arranging tables and chairs for assemblies, conferences, or other functions.
Handle minor carpentry tasks, including repairing doors, cabinets, desks, and other furniture.
Perform basic grounds maintenance, including lawn care, landscaping, snow removal, and trash collection to keep the school grounds safe and attractive.
Ensure that all facilities are in compliance with health and safety regulations, including maintaining fire safety equipment and emergency exits.
Perform safety checks on equipment and school facilities to minimize hazards and reduce the risk of injury.
Assist with safety drills, such as fire drills or lockdown drills, ensuring that all safety equipment is functional and available.
Maintain and repair playgrounds, ensuring they are safe for student use and in compliance with safety standards.
Support school events by setting up classrooms, auditoriums, and other spaces with the necessary equipment (e.g., projectors, chairs, tables).
Assist with sound systems, lighting, and other technical equipment used for school events, ensuring everything runs smoothly.
Clean and restore spaces after events, ensuring the environment is ready for regular use.
Maintain an inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment, and reorder as necessary to ensure adequate stock for ongoing work.
Assist with the tracking and management of school assets, including furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
Operate and maintain power tools, machinery, and other equipment safely and according to established safety protocols.
Work with school administrators and other staff members to address maintenance issues promptly and minimize disruption to the school’s activities.
Respond to urgent requests from teachers and staff for maintenance or repair work.
Collaborate with outside vendors and contractors for specialized services (e.g., HVAC repairs, electrical work) and oversee their work to ensure it meets district standards.
Keep accurate records of maintenance work performed, including dates, descriptions of work, and any follow-up actions needed.
Report any major repair needs or facility issues that require significant time, expertise, or financial resources to the Facilities Manager.
Complete work orders in a timely manner and communicate effectively with school leadership about maintenance needs.
