About The Position

The City of Lakewood is hiring for either a Maintenance Technician or a Maintenance Specialist (Steps 2-4), dependent upon qualifications. This role operates dump trucks, as well as other equipment and tools, and labors in the daily operation of maintenance crews in the Maintenance Division of Public Works. The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and a valid CDL Class B license with air brake and tanker endorsements (or ability to obtain within 6 months). A flagger certification is also required (or ability to obtain within 6 months). The role involves physically arduous work outdoors in various weather conditions and may require on-call duty. Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid CDL Class B license with air brake endorsement and tanker endorsement (or ability to obtain in 6 months).
Flagger certification (or ability to obtain in 6 months).
Ability and willingness to perform any and all tasks required to complete work projects, including general laboring.
Demonstrated knowledge and skills to perform as a laborer on the following operations: pothole patching, major street patching/paving/rolling, sweeper operation and support, snow and ice control, drainage operations, water and sewer operations.
Skills in the operation of the following hand tools: Rakes, shovels and picks.
Must be able to interact and communicate effectively with others in a positive manner.
Ability to work effectively as a team member.
Ability to work and be productive without constant supervision.
Ability to serve as positive role model to other employees.
Ability to maintain a businesslike attitude, placing priority on services for Lakewood citizens.

Must make safety- related decisions when operating equipment, performing job tasks, setting up traffic control and plowing and sanding streets.
6 months’ experience in Lakewood’s Maintenance Division and successful completion of probationary period (Specialist Step 2).
Two years’ experience in Lakewood’s Maintenance Division or a construction-related field (Specialist Step 3).
Five years’ experience in Lakewood’s Maintenance Division or a construction related field (Specialist Step 4).
Certified as skilled operator: Single axle dump trucks, Tandem axle dump trucks, Wheel loader, Snowplows, Jet Truck, Street sweeper, Roller, Tool Cat, Patch Truck (All Step Levels).
Certified as skilled operator: Bobcat (Specialist Step 2).
Certified as skilled operator: Skid steer, De-ice truck, CCTV Van, Water truck, General hand tools for plumbing work, Backhoe, Sewer cleaning equipment, Cutting torch, Power saw, Electric welder, Pumps, Lutes, Rakes, Shovels, Picks, Pipe cutter (Specialist Step 3).
Certified as skilled operator: Skid steer, De-ice truck, Forklifts, Motor Grader, Backhoe, Combination sewer cleaner, Rubber tire excavator, Asphalt paver, CCTV Van, Material Stacker, Jackhammer, Cutting torch, Power saw, Electric welder, Pumps, Lutes, Rakes, Shovels, Picks, Pipe cutter (Specialist Step 4).
Certifications: Flagger, Defensive Driving, Asbestos, Confined Space (All Step Levels).
Certifications: Actively enrolled in the LTAP Road Scholar I (Street Maintenance Specific) (Specialist Step 2).
Certifications: AWWA Collections I and Distribution I (Utilities specific), OSHA 10 (Construction), APWA operator training program, NASSCO PACP, LACP, and MACP (Utilities Specific), Actively enrolled in LTAP road scholar II (Street maintenance specific) (Specialist Step 3).
Certifications: AWWA Collections II and Distribution II (Utilities Specific), OSHA 10 and 30, APWA operator training program, NASSCO PACP, LACP, and MACP (Utilities Specific), APWA winter maintenance supervisor certification, Actively enrolled LTAP Road scholar supervisory skills and development, must already have obtained road scholar II (Street maintenance specific), Traffic control supervisor (Specialist Step 4).
Must lift items from levels that include: floor level or from below the knee; knee through chest level and above the shoulder level that may weigh in excess of 100 pounds.
Must use high force to manipulate equipment and valves.
Must be able to carry items distances of plus/minus 25 feet.
Must be able to hear and respond to in person communication.
Must also hear radio transmissions, pagers, back-up alarms and telephones.
Uses vision for reading and depth perception, for excavating tasks, awareness of equipment in surroundings, driving, surveying and performing traffic control.

Nice To Haves

Completion of vocational or college-level courses preferred.
Experience in Public Works Maintenance operations or construction preferred.
Service on Division, Department or City-wide committees; and vocational or college-level courses (Specialist All Step Levels).
Successful completion of training in interpersonal skills; supervisory skills; and technical aspects of public works maintenance operations (Specialist Step 2).
Successful completion of training in technical aspects of public works maintenance operations; interpersonal skills; supervisory skills; and intermediate computer skills (Specialist Step 4).
Traffic control technician certification preferred (Specialist Step 3).

Responsibilities

Labors and drives dump trucks and snowplows, as well as other equipment for asphalt repair work, digging ditches, cleaning gulches, cleaning inlets, laying pipes, repairing pipes, grading roads, etc.
Assists in repairing water and sewer breaks.
Performs other maintenance duties as needed, including laboring on various crews, cleaning equipment, yard work and office functions.
Plows and sands City streets during winter months.
Adjusts, inspects, cleans and performs minor maintenance on vehicular and non-vehicular equipment.
Cleans and maintains tools; cleans work and shop area.
Performs physically arduous work outdoors.
Logs daily work activities and inspection records of City facilities.
Follows prescribed safety measures.
Must maintain and utilize City-provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when conducting activities where the employee is exposed to risks above those encountered in a traditional office setting.
On-call duty on a rotating basis (voluntary except for the water, sewer, and snow/ice control section where it is mandatory).
Labors and operates loaders, dump trucks, snowplows, as well as other equipment for asphalt repair work, digging ditches, cleaning gulches, cleaning inlets, cleaning storm and sanitary sewer lines, laying pipes, repairing pipes, grading roads, etc.
Trains and instructs new employees (Specialist levels).
Acts as lead worker for Maintenance Division work crews (Specialist Step 4).
Gives positive direction to crew members, organizes daily work activities and ensures work projects are completed in a quality and efficient manner (Specialist Step 4).
Fills in as Maintenance Crew Leader in absence of Supervisor which includes giving instruction in the field and checking on overall progress of work crews on a daily basis (Specialist Step 4).
Gives regular feedback to supervisory staff on employee performance and project status (Specialist Step 4).
Operates backhoes, excavators, graders, vacuum inlet cleaning equipment and street cleaning equipment as well as other equipment (Specialist Step 4).
Reads and interprets blueprints and project specifications (Specialist Step 4).
Ensures that all crew members perform their work efficiently while following prescribed safety measures (Specialist Step 4).
Assists in coordinating daily work schedules (Specialist Step 3 & 4).
Assists in locating and buying materials (Specialist Step 4).
Operates patch trucks, bobcats, sewer cleaners, and street cleaning equipment as well as other equipment (Specialist Step 3).
Fills in as maintenance lead person in absence of lead person, which includes giving instruction in the field (Specialist Step 3).
Reads, repairs and operates water meters and related equipment (Specialist Step 3).
