About The Position

The Shift Engineer is responsible for ensuring that the property is maintained in the best possible condition at all times with the least amount of inconvenience to customers and employees. This role involves performing preventive maintenance and repairs across guest rooms and public areas, maintaining major building systems, diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The position also requires responding to guest requests and emergency calls promptly, maintaining accurate records, and performing upkeep of exterior areas.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent and/or experience in a hotel or a related field required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs across guest rooms and public areas, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, furniture, fixtures, and finishes to ensure optimal functionality and guest comfort.
  • Maintain and service all major building systems, including boilers, chillers, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues, including water lines, pumps, kitchen equipment, and air conditioning systems (filters, coils, motors).
  • Execute routine maintenance tasks such as replacing and programming televisions, repairing electronic lock systems, and installing or repairing lighting components (switches, receptacles, bulbs, and fixtures).
  • Complete carpentry and cosmetic repairs, including furniture repair, sheetrock finishing, painting, and wall covering restoration.
  • Conduct equipment monitoring, including taking and recording readings, testing cooling towers, and identifying abnormalities.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams to support effective troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Maintain accurate records of preventive maintenance, repairs, and equipment performance.
  • Ensure all work is completed in compliance with applicable local, state, and federal codes and safety standards.
  • Respond to guest service requests and emergency calls within 10 minutes, supporting overall guest satisfaction.
  • Follow all emergency procedures and provide operational support during critical situations.
  • Perform daily shift engineer checklists and promptly report any irregularities.
  • Maintain exterior areas, including snow removal operations (shoveling, snowblowers, equipment use) and routine grounds upkeep such as leaf and debris removal.
  • Ensure proper care, organization, and maintenance of tools, equipment, and workspaces, maintaining a clean and safe environment.
  • Identify and report safety hazards to the Director of Engineering in a timely manner.
