About The Position

The City of Roanoke is seeking an experienced, self-motivated individual to perform skilled mechanical work on heavy and light power-driven equipment as a Maintenance Technician IV. The successful candidate will serve as an expert resource in the guidance and instruction of the work of subordinate mechanics and service workers and diagnose, adjust, repair and service the full range of power-driven equipment used by the City including diesel or gasoline engine equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus and aerial truck hydraulic systems. Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; one to three years related experience and/or training in repairing heavy power-driven equipment; diesel and gasoline; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Must attain three ASE certifications within 2 years of employment.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and three to five years experience and/or training in trades area assigned or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Frequently required to walk, climb or balance, and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • State Inspection license & Class B CDL preferred or have a Class B CDL within 12 months of employment.
  • Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license.
  • May require master-level licensure in an area of skilled trades.
  • May require registered technician license and Certified Fertilizer Applicator certification.
  • May be required to qualify for certification as a State Inspector.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in highly skilled maintenance, and construction activities.
  • Performs work in multiple skilled trades.
  • Assigns and supervises the work of maintenance workers and technicians
  • Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor
  • Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials
  • Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports
  • Performs or assists in performing more difficult or skilled tasks
  • May perform inspection of playgrounds and associated equipment
  • Performs minor repair of buildings, doors, windows and floors, locks, cabinets, and similar items
  • Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
  • Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services the full range of power-driven equipment used by the City including diesel or gasoline engine equipment, air compressors, pump apparatus and aerial truck hydraulic systems.
  • Coordinates with and advises the public on daily or emergency functions
  • Performs trades work in multiple assigned areas at a Master level such as motor equipment repair, welding, carpentry, HVAC, electrical, and plumbing
  • Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal
  • Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
  • Knowledge of pertinent rules and regulations, guidelines, safety orders, departmental operating procedures and safety regulations sufficient to insure that work is performed in compliance with applicable law.
  • Enforces sound safety and housekeeping practices.
  • Follows safety rules/procedures; avoid known hazards in the work environment.
  • Reviews safety procedures before beginning each job with known hazards.
  • Follows established safety procedures
  • Supervises a work crew in maintenance and construction operations within assigned department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
