About The Position

St. John the Baptist Catholic Church is seeking a dependable and motivated Maintenance Technician / Custodian to help maintain a clean, safe, welcoming, and well-functioning parish campus and rectory. The position is responsible for the daily cleaning, upkeep, maintenance, and general care of all parish buildings and grounds. The schedule is Monday through Friday with occasional evening and weekend hours to support events and special liturgical celebrations. The ideal candidate will take pride in preserving the appearance and functionality of the church property while supporting the mission and ministries of the parish. The Maintenance Technician / Custodian performs routine cleaning, assists with parish event setup and breakdown, monitors building systems, performs minor repairs, coordinates with outside vendors when necessary, and helps ensure that all parish facilities and the rectory remain in excellent condition for parishioners, guests, staff, and ministry groups.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of custodial work, facility maintenance, and basic building systems.
  • Ability to use cleaning equipment, hand tools, and maintenance equipment safely and effectively.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and respond to changing parish needs.
  • Ability to perform physical work including lifting (50 lbs), bending, climbing ladders, and standing for extended periods.
  • Dependable, professional, and service-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to work efficiently without compromising quality.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of leadership, vendors, employees, and the general public.
  • Average computer skills, including aptitude with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percentage.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must successfully pass the required criminal background check prior to employment and every five years.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain the church, parish hall, offices, classrooms, restrooms, and other parish facilities daily.
  • Ensure all parish buildings and grounds are clean, orderly, safe, and welcoming.
  • Vacuum, sweep, mop, dust, sanitize, and remove trash as needed.
  • Monitor and restock cleaning supplies, paper products, soap, and other consumable items.
  • Assist in maintaining the overall appearance of the parish campus and surrounding grounds.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on parish/rectory buildings, equipment, and property.
  • Troubleshoot and assist with repairs involving plumbing, electrical, HVAC, lighting, mechanical systems, and other building-related issues within the skill level of the position.
  • Identify maintenance concerns proactively and report recommendations for repairs or outsourced services when needed.
  • Conduct regular inspections of parish facilities, grounds, and rectory to help prevent costly repairs and maintain safe conditions.
  • Assist with maintaining an inventory of equipment, tools, and maintenance supplies.
  • Help ensure all equipment receives appropriate scheduled maintenance and service.
  • Set up and break down tables, chairs, and equipment for parish liturgies, meetings, events, and special activities.
  • Support parish staff and ministries with facility-related needs during parish functions.
  • Maintain positive working relationships with outside contractors and facility service vendors.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests from parish staff and ministry leaders.
  • Follow all safety procedures and take appropriate precautions while performing cleaning, maintenance, or repair work.
  • Help ensure parish facilities remain secure and in compliance with safety standards.
