About The Position

The City of Roanoke is seeking a dedicated and dynamic candidate to coordinate the Landscape crew for the Transportation Division. This position performs difficult skilled work overseeing all aspects of the City's landscape maintenance program including supervision of six landscape maintenance crews as well as multiple maintenance contracts. Performs or assists in the planning, preparation, estimation, and design of maintenance and minor construction projects. Reviews landscape plans and coordinates streetscape planting and/or renovation projects. Responsible for maintenance of approximately 900 locations within public rights-of-way and other designated locations. Will develop and maintain schedules for maintenance activities and communicate activities to both internal and external customers. Will also have a lead role in snow removal efforts; coordinating activities of employees from multiple departments during snow events. Must have excellent problem solving, verbal and written skills, an orientation toward producing results and knowledge of computer software such as Microsoft Office, Excel and Powerpoint as well as ability to make presentations to groups of employees and/or the public.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Five or more years related experience and/or training in skilled maintenance or construction work and supervisory experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to prepare plans and detailed reports.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must possess a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Current possession of, or ability to obtain within 15 months of hire, valid Virginia Commercial Pesticide Applicator's permits in categories 3A, 3B, and 6.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor's degree in horticulture, forestry, arboriculture or related field is a plus
  • Certified Grounds Manager (CGM) designation is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Oversees and delegates field supervision
  • Ensures project conformance to work plans and orders
  • Performs or assists in the planning, preparation, estimation, and design of maintenance and construction projects
  • Monitors internal projects and outside contractors for conformance to set standards and procedures
  • Coordinates and schedules equipment and work flow for maximum efficiency
  • Works with other City departments, business, agencies, and other governments concerning joint projects
  • Accounts for department inventory and ensures preventative maintenance of equipment
  • Provides training and instruction to subordinates as required
  • Prepares and submits detailed reports and records
  • Assists in the preparation of the department budget
  • Works on the project site and gives advice and assistance to crew
  • Receives and handles complaints and accident reports
  • May operate heavy and light equipment in snow removal
  • Assumes duties of Maintenance Superintendent as needed
  • May be required to wear some type of respiratory protection in the performance of their duties
  • Supervises several skilled and unskilled crews engaged in maintenance and construction operations within assigned department.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
