About The Position

JCC Chicago is the largest of more than 170 Jewish Community Centers in North America. The Maintenance Staff work closely with the Director, Facilities to ensure the upkeep and function of Camp Chi/Perlstein Retreat Center’s various facilities and equipment. The Maintenance Staff will complete projects at the direction of the Director, Facilities to keep camp running smoothly and improving the safety, function, and cleanliness of the facilities.

Requirements

  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor (skilled and semi-skilled), lift and/or carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must have full use of hands to handle objects, sometimes performing repetitious hand motion depending on the task.
  • Must be able to safely operate power and hand tools.
  • Must be able to walk, climb up and down stairwells, bend, stoop, twist, kneel and squat as needed to perform the job.
  • Must be able to set up and take down facilities and equipment.
  • Must be able to carry and climb a ladder.
  • Able to hear oral instructions, speak to others clearly and have normal range of vision.
  • Must be able to work safely with a variety of hazardous chemicals including cleaning, products, solvents & glues.
  • Must be able to stand for long period of times and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing janitorial and housekeeping skills.
  • Certified Pool Operator license (or the ability to become certified) required.
  • Previous experience using hand and power tools required.
  • Knowledge of Plumbing and Carpentry basics.
  • Knowledge of HVAC systems.
  • Working knowledge of pool chemicals and pool filtration systems.
  • Knowledge floor scrubbing/buffing equipment, carpet cleaners/shampooing equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and work independently yet function as part of a team.
  • Ability to operate truck with snow plow, riding lawnmowers and chain saws.
  • Ability to climb up ladders up to 20 feet height.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and carry heavy and/or large equipment such as: sump pumps, furniture, 10ft.tables, benches and packages for delivery.
  • Must show work history of increased responsibility with a demonstrated ability and willingness to work flexible hours; must be able to work extended hours, including six days straight during eight weeks of summer camp.
  • Valid driver’s license with daily access to dependable transportation.
  • Must be compliant with the agency’s policy of automobile insurance limits, and a driving record that meets the requirements for coverage of the agency’s business auto insurance carrier.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on work to accomplish tasks related to repair involving carpentry, plumbing, electric, painting, A/C, etc. for a multitude of structures and outside grounds on over 600 acres.
  • Clean breakout rooms, hallways, bathrooms and offices areas.
  • Provide support for camp activities (ie: cut and deliver firewood for evening campfires).
  • Ensure timely and accurate program and general facility set-ups / breakdowns.
  • Set up and tear down of chairs, tables, cots or bunks and equipment in meeting rooms, dining hall, pavilion, function rooms and guest rooms.
  • Set up of facilities in preparation of scheduled guest activities including bonfires, gymnasium, hayrides, swimming pools, etc.
  • Provide weekend coverage of Camp Chi/Perlstein program support, coverage for emergency call outs, site rounds as needed.
  • Provide needed repairs for items such as shower fixtures, toilets, sinks, cabin furniture, stairs, porches etc.
  • Inspect and troubleshoot equipment and systems and ensure proper functionality of safety systems (e.g. fire alarm).
  • Check control panels and electrical wiring to identify issues.
  • Install appliances and equipment.
  • Update supervisor on parts and materials needed to complete assigned tasks.
  • Know and follow safety rules and procedures while performing all assigned tasks.
  • Perform work according to standard procedure and by camp's operational schedule.
  • Report to Property Manager/Asst Property Manager regarding issues resolved, those needing attention, and those currently in progress.
