About The Position

This is an entry-level position in the Public Works Department's Streets Division, responsible for performing routine semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance, operation, repair, and replacement of municipal infrastructure. The role involves working with some independence under the general supervision of a Public Works Supervisor and requires a strong work ethic and positive attitude. The position necessitates availability for emergency response outside of normal working hours and participation in the On-Call Program. The Streets Division is responsible for pavement and sidewalk maintenance, snow and ice control, brush and leaf collection, street sweeping, traffic signal and roadway sign maintenance, and pavement markings. This division also engages in educational outreach to residents.

Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow detailed oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to learn the operation and maintenance of all equipment and procedures within the Division.
  • Some knowledge of heavy-duty trucks and maintenance equipment.
  • Some knowledge of general construction, particularly with concrete and asphalt paving and other roadway infrastructure.
  • Ability to complete Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 10-Hour construction training or equivalent.
  • Ability to deal with the public effectively, courteously and tactfully.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other Town employees.
  • Physical stamina to withstand long working hours outdoors performing manual labor under adverse weather conditions, especially as it relates to the back, legs and arms.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License issued by the State of Illinois.

Nice To Haves

  • A high school diploma, GED, or other vocational school certification, supplemented by some related maintenance or construction experience is preferred, or any other combination of experience or training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in maintaining safe streets, alleys, curbs, and sidewalks through concrete and asphalt repairs, pot hole patching, snow and ice control, street sweeping, leaf removal, and street signage.
  • Learns and operates equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip checks on vehicles.
  • Attends safety training and complies with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Assists in patching potholes and utilizing a "hot box" asphalt.
  • Performs the application of pavement markings and striping.
  • Operates 1 to 5 ton trucks for snow and ice removal.
  • Operates a 5 ton leaf truck for leaf removal, including using a vacuum tube attachment and leaf raking.
  • Operates a crack seal machine and air compressor for crack sealing operations.
  • Understands and applies common traffic control measures and standards.
  • Is available for emergency work 24 hours a day, on call.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
