About The Position

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking a skilled and motivated team member to support the Southwest Region Area 4 Maintenance organization in maintaining highways and related infrastructure to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people, goods, and services. In this role, you will install, repair, and maintain roadway signs and pavement markings across the region, working independently, collaboratively, or in a lead capacity to address routine maintenance and third-party damage. Responsibilities include maintaining accurate records, entering data into tracking systems, preparing damage estimates, and operating specialized equipment and vehicles to complete essential functions. You will also support team development by training others in sign installation, maintenance practices, and broader roadway and right of way activities, while promoting a respectful and safety-focused work environment. Our top candidate will have consistent work history, demonstrated experience with roadway maintenance and traffic control devices, the ability to operate equipment safely, and the ability to lead and collaborate effectively in a team setting.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience safely performing roadway maintenance, heavy equipment operation, or related work such as farming, timber operations, or construction.
  • Experience applying established safety policies and procedures including hazard recognition, proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Experience leading and/or supervising crews, providing clear direction, training others, and making sound decisions in time-sensitive or stressful field conditions.
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision, plan and prioritize workload, and manage multiple assignments to meet operational deadlines.
  • Basic proficiency using computers or tablets to complete reports, track inventory, and enter data, including experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.

  • A valid Class A CDL with N endorsement without air brake restrictions with a current medical examiner’s certificate to be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • A valid Traffic Control/Flagging card or to obtain with twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Ability and willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24/7.
  • Ability to report in service to assigned duty station within 45 minutes of an after-hours call.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work at elevated heights, above 25 feet above land or water.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience performing traffic control per Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
  • Experience performing highway maintenance functions, including routine and emergency roadway maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply Best Management Practices (BMPs) related to environmental compliance in roadway maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of the surrounding geographic area to support efficient navigation, response, and maintenance operations.
  • Demonstrated experience across multiple maintenance disciplines, including signage, pavement repair, drainage, vegetation management, and equipment operation.

Responsibilities

  • Prioritize, plan, schedule, and budget sign maintenance activities to accomplish the work.
  • Lead, schedule, and direct highway sign maintenance activities throughout State Highways.
  • Assemble, install, and replace signs, sign components and signposts using a variety of equipment and tools such as hand diggers, portable power augers, pavement breakers, ladders and bucket truck.
  • Pour cement bases, install steel posts, attach wind beams and signs to post.
  • Inspect signs in all types of weather, in both day and nighttime conditions; perform routine sign maintenance work as required.
  • Wash signs using bucket truck.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment, including, but not limited to cleaning vehicles, and greasing equipment, etc.
  • Operate highway Class A, B, or C Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) equipment, power tools and hand tools for maintenance operations.
  • Train staff to perform sign maintenance and operations tasks in the event of absences.
  • Train personnel in equipment usage, safety, highway sign maintenance, coordinates equipment and staffing needs with fellow Highway Maintenance Workers.
  • Actively participate in, and at times lead, crew safety and training meetings to ensure safe work practices and compliance with new.
