About The Position

ASRC Federal Field Services, a Subsidiary of ASRC Federal Holding Company, is currently seeking a Maintenance Mechanic at the Plum Island Animal Disease Research Center, located on Plum Island, NY. This role is key to supporting all phases of facility operations and maintenance in a research facility that operates on a continuous 24/7 basis. The position involves performing a variety of tasks related to the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities, including both preventive maintenance and repair services. Marine transportation is furnished by a Government-provided ferry.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Journeyman level experience in mechanical, plumbing, and electrical crafts.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting, installation and repair techniques.
  • Ability to become an active member of the PIADC Fire Brigade.
  • Must be physically able to move freely in environments that are restricted in space, unsteady or otherwise not easily accessible.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs.
  • As a condition for employment, all personnel entering the BSL-3 biocontainment facilities at Plum Island shall not be in contact with specific susceptible animals and their premises off Plum Island for a period of five (5) days after leaving biocontainment. Currently, restricted species are cattle, sheep, goats, deer, other ruminants, and swine. Contact with horses, birds (agricultural and pet birds) and rabbits are normally permitted, but restrictions may be placed on staff working with or near-contagious agents affecting these species. Restricted livestock or other restricted animals may not be housed on the premises where the employee lives and where the quarantine cannot be enforced.

Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of the maintenance team in support of all phases of facility operations and maintenance.
  • Perform a variety of tasks involved in the upkeep of buildings, grounds and related structures, fixtures, and utilities.
  • Perform preventive maintenance as well as repair services.
  • Respond to facility outages and tend to mechanical components and issues.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on motors, controls, drives and gearboxes.
  • Repair and maintain the physical structure of the facility including heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment.
  • Perform simple carpentry, plumbing, painting and electric repair as needed.
  • Perform general repair and maintenance including but not limited to fixing doors, windows, hinges, changing plugs, re-lamping, moving and replacing.
  • Install door locks, windows, and construct walls to meet reconstruction needs of the facility.
  • Become an active member of the PIADC Fire Brigade.
