About The Position

This role involves performing a variety of skilled and semi-skilled vehicle maintenance and repair work. The Maintenance Mechanic I is an entry-level position with little to no directly related work experience, serving as a training class. The Maintenance Mechanic II is a journey-level position responsible for performing the full range of duties, potentially including organizing, assigning, and reviewing the work of others, performing specialized tasks, and providing administrative support. Both roles require reliable attendance and punctuality, scheduling preventative maintenance, coordinating with departments, assisting in ordering tools and parts, scheduling outsourced repairs, examining and diagnosing mechanical defects in a diverse fleet (automobiles, trucks, emergency vehicles, medium-duty construction equipment), and performing major and minor repairs on various vehicle systems. This includes working with diesel, gasoline, compressed natural gas, and electric-powered vehicles and equipment. Specific tasks include overhauling engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, and hydraulic systems; welding and fabricating parts; performing tire replacements and repairs; diagnosing and repairing tire pressure sensor systems; ensuring service objectives are met; maintaining shop equipment and a clean workspace; answering mechanical questions; and building positive working relationships. The Maintenance Mechanic II also requires knowledge of supervision principles and the ability to provide technical and functional supervision and training.

Requirements

Must be age eighteen (18) by date of application.
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.
Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid California Class A driver license within six (6) months of hire date (Maintenance Mechanic I).
Possession of a valid California Class A driver license (Maintenance Mechanic II).
Experience in fleet vehicle maintenance and knowledge of automotive and equipment mechanics (Maintenance Mechanic I).
Two (2) years of experience equivalent to Maintenance Mechanic I or similar position (Maintenance Mechanic II).
Knowledge of simple and complex automotive diagnostic equipment.
Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Knowledge of English usage, including spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Knowledge of techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, and electric-powered equipment and related components, including engines, brake systems, and electrical systems.
Knowledge of the theory, care, and operation of gasoline, diesel, compressed natural gas, and mechanical components.
Understand methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the trade and their use in maintenance and repair.
Knowledge of preventative maintenance inspection methods.
Knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and Local laws, codes, and regulations.
Knowledge of requirements pertaining to vehicle emission equipment and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for proper handling of chemicals and hazardous waste.
Knowledge of methods and techniques of scheduling work assignments.
Knowledge of principles and practices of good customer service.
Knowledge of journey level methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive and mechanical equipment (Maintenance Mechanic II).
Knowledge of journey level skills in auto diesel and light and heavy gas engines (Maintenance Mechanic II).
Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety precautions necessary in the workplace.
Knowledge of City regulations, procedures, and operations related to operation and maintenance of City-owned vehicles.
Knowledge of principles of supervision (Maintenance Mechanic II).
Ability to work independently with limited direct supervision.
Ability to perform essential functions responsibly and professionally.
Ability to intermittently sit while studying or preparing reports.
Ability to bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist when performing installation of equipment.

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled vehicle maintenance and repair work.
Schedule vehicles for day-to-day preventative maintenance.
Coordinate vehicle pickup and delivery with departments.
Assist in ordering tools, parts, and equipment.
Schedule outsourcing for repair or warranty work.
Examine, diagnose, and locate mechanical defects of fleet vehicles and equipment.
Determine the extent of necessary repairs.
Perform major and minor mechanical repairs on various vehicle and equipment operating systems (hydraulic, air, ignition, electric, electronic, emissions, vacuum, exhaust, intake cooling, braking, ABS, suspension, air conditioning, etc.).
Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, hydraulic systems, and body-mounted systems.
Weld, fabricate, repair, and assemble parts and equipment.
Perform tire replacements and repairs.
Perform tire pressure sensor (TPS) system diagnosis, repair, calibration, and wheel balancing.
Ensure service objectives, standards, and goals are followed.
Respond to questions and concerns, establishing and maintaining a customer service-oriented work ethic.
Properly maintain shop equipment, vehicle lifts, and tools through routine inspections.
Maintain a clean workspace and adhere to housekeeping rules.
Answer general mechanical questions and provide information to staff.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public.
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Organize, assign, and review the work of assigned personnel (Maintenance Mechanic II).
Perform duties requiring specialized knowledge (Maintenance Mechanic II).
Provide administrative support to assigned supervisor (Maintenance Mechanic II).
