About The Position

Grower Direct Farms is a leading wholesale greenhouse operation based in Somers, CT, serving major retail partners throughout New England and parts of New York. We are seeking a hands-on Maintenance Mechanic with a strong background in equipment diagnostics, repair, and maintenance, with a primary focus on forklifts and mobile equipment. This role is ideal for individuals with experience in forklift repair, diesel mechanics, automotive service, agricultural equipment, or heavy equipment maintenance who enjoy solving problems and keeping critical equipment operating safely and efficiently. The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, repairing, and improving mobile equipment used throughout greenhouse and operational environments. Primary responsibility centers on forklift maintenance and reliability, while also supporting tractors, Motrec electric vehicles, tuggers, and other mobile assets. This position plays a critical role in minimizing equipment downtime and supporting daily operations.

Requirements

  • Experience in forklift repair strongly preferred
  • Background in automotive, diesel, agricultural, heavy equipment, or industrial maintenance preferred
  • Experience troubleshooting hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems
  • Welding and fabrication experience strongly preferred
  • Ability to read service manuals, technical documentation, and schematics
  • Strong problem-solving and diagnostic skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize competing repair needs
  • Valid driver's license required

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain forklifts including propane, diesel, and electric models
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on tractors, agricultural equipment, Motrec buggies/tuggers, and material handling equipment
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems
  • Perform reactive maintenance to minimize operational downtime
  • Respond quickly to equipment breakdowns and operational needs
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance activities on forklifts and critical mobile equipment
  • Conduct inspections to identify potential mechanical or safety issues before failures occur
  • Monitor recurring issues and recommend corrective actions or equipment improvements
  • Perform welding and fabrication work to support repairs and extend equipment life
  • Complete structural repairs and equipment modifications as needed
  • Develop practical solutions for equipment-related operational issues
  • Utilize work order systems to document diagnostics, repairs, labor hours, and parts usage
  • Maintain organized inventory of repair parts and equipment components
  • Ensure tools and diagnostic equipment remain maintained and available
  • Support Growing, Production, Transportation, and Merchandising teams through reliable equipment availability
  • Communicate equipment status, downtime risks, and repair timelines to leadership
  • Recommend opportunities for improving equipment performance and reliability
