About The Position

The Maintenance Mechanic I–IV reports to the Fleet Services Foreman and performs maintenance and repair on Fire trucks, tandems, specialty vehicles, automobiles, and light equipment. Responsibilities include diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a wide range of systems, including engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical components. The position also prepares new vehicles for service by reviewing specifications and installing specialized equipment. The role provides responsive customer service, including on-site repairs, after-hours support, and special service requests. It includes conducting required inspections, maintaining compliance documentation, and updating warranty and service records. Requires a rotational on call shift, including weekends, holidays, evenings, or extended hours based on operational needs.

Requirements

  • Vocational or technical training in equipment, vehicle, and/or electrical and mechanical systems
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Must supply and maintain required personal tools to perform assigned work
  • Mechanic Level I: 0–2 years of entry-level mechanical experience
  • Mechanic Level II: Two (2) years of progressively responsible mechanical experience
  • Mechanic Level II: Independently performs standard diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs
  • Mechanic Level III: Three (3) years of advanced mechanical experience
  • Mechanic Level III: EVT F1 certification within two (2) years of employment
  • Mechanic Level III: EVT F2 certification within three (3) years of employment
  • Mechanic Level III: EPA Section 609 certification within 90 days
  • Mechanic Level III: Diesel Emissions Certification (except transit), or obtain within one (1) year
  • Mechanic Level IV: 5+ years of advanced and specialized mechanical experience
  • Mechanic Level IV: Serves as a technical expert and lead resource
  • Mechanic Level IV: Master ASE (A, H, or T Series) or EVT certifications F1–F6
  • Mechanic Level IV: CNG Tank Inspector Certification (Transit only)
  • Mechanic Level IV: Diesel Emissions Certification (except transit), or obtain within one (1) year
  • Mechanic Level IV: EPA Section 609 certification within 90 days
  • Mechanic Level IV: Ability to perform lead responsibilities in the absence of Foreman
  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of vehicle maintenance and repair, particularly related to diesel, gasoline, hybrid, and/or electric transit vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and fuel systems.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and computerized vehicle diagnostic software
  • Skill in diagnosing and repairing complex vehicle systems with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Proficiency in using hand tools, power tools, lifts, and specialized diagnostic equipment.
  • Skill in reading and interpreting technical manuals, schematics, and diagnostic codes.
  • Effective time management and task prioritization in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency or on-call assignments.

Nice To Haves

  • Current certification or have the ability to become certified to perform Department of Transportation vehicle inspections within one (1) year of hire date.
  • For Levels I – III, some ASE Certification (A Series, H Series, or T Series) preferred.
  • For Levels I – III, some EVT Certification ( F1 - F6)
  • CNG Fuel System Engine Certificate or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
  • Understand standard automotive mechanics and CNG systems.
  • Prior experience working in a public transit, municipal fleet, or commercial vehicle maintenance environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on vehicles.
  • Troubleshoot and repair a variety of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, air brake, fuel system, and diesel and gas engine issues.
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain all types of heavy and/or light duty equipment.
  • Perform both routine maintenance of vehicles and major repairs.
  • Prepare new vehicles for service including order specifications, installing components or special equipment.
  • Provide customer service such as on-site service, after-hours service, and special requests for service.
  • Perform required annual tests on vehicles/mechanical equipment and prepare the appropriate documentation.
  • Maintain or update information on warranty repairs.
  • Prepare new vehicles for service by reviewing specifications, installing auxiliary systems or components, and outfitting with specialized transit equipment.
  • Respond to service calls, breakdowns, and after-hours maintenance needs, including on-site troubleshooting and emergency repairs.
  • Perform required annual safety inspections and emissions tests, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations; complete all related documentation accurately.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, inspections, parts usage, and warranty work using fleet management systems.
  • Assist in managing parts inventory, including tracking, ordering, and verifying deliveries of required components.
  • Operate a variety of shop equipment and diagnostic tools in accordance with safety and operational guidelines.
  • Work scheduled shifts, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call or emergency assignments as required.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment, following all applicable safety procedures and wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
