About The Position

The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for maintaining the facility's essential systems and equipment to ensure the safety and comfort of residents. This includes the emergency power system, hot water system, resident call system, lighting, and ventilation. The role also involves general facility maintenance, repair of resident equipment, and pest control. The Maintenance Mechanic cooperates with other departments to meet resident needs and participates in emergency preparedness.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains the emergency power system to ensure availability of power to all entrances, exits, fire detection alarms and extinguishing equipment and life support systems in the event electrical supplies are interrupted.
  • Maintains, adjusts, and repairs all essential equipment (e.g. boiler room equipment, nursing unit/medication room refrigerators, refrigerator/freezer, laundry equipment, etc.) in safe operating condition.
  • Maintains, adjusts, and repairs all facility general equipment as well as any resident equipment (e.g. wheel chairs, beds, furniture, etc.) under proper guidance as necessary.
  • Ensures the availability of portable water to essential areas in the event of loss of normal water supply.
  • Checks facility hot water system on regular basis to evaluate water temperatures in essential locations of facility.
  • Maintains, adjusts, and repairs hot water system to eliminate hazards to facility residents, staff and others.
  • Maintains, adjusts and repairs resident call system to ensure a functioning communication system from rooms, toilets and bathing areas.
  • Inspects physical plant for any signs of rodents or pests.
  • In cooperation with Housekeeping Department, implements effective pest control system to eliminate any rodents and pests.
  • Maintains, adjusts, and repairs adequate and comfortable lighting level, appropriate for tasks, without glare.
  • Maintains, adjusts and repairs facility ventilation system to provide good air movement with acceptable temperature, humidity and odor levels and to eliminate drafts and provide adequate smoke exhaust.
  • Cooperates with other departments to identify and accommodate individual resident needs and preferences.
  • Communicates directly with residents, families, and legal representatives to identify approaches that will protect and promote resident rights.
  • Maintains furniture and equipment appropriate to individual needs and ability.
  • Maintains current skills and knowledge through continuing education.
  • Applies information to job responsibilities.
  • Participates in fire and disaster drills.
  • In event of emergency, carries out assigned duties to assure resident safety.
