About The Position

This position serves as the primary technician for the Adaptive Devices Department and plays a critical role in maintaining, repairing and fabricating adaptive equipment used throughout the facility. The incumbent consults with medical professionals, and other staff, and constructs, modifies, and repairs custom adaptive equipment using a variety of materials, tools, and specialized equipment. The Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) works in partnership with local communities to support people with developmental disabilities in living, learning, and working in their communities. APD provides critical services and support for customers with developmental disabilities to reach their full potential. The Agency serves people with spina bifida, autism, Down syndrome, children ages 3-5 at high risk of developmental disabilities, cerebral palsy, Prader-Willi syndrome, Phelan-McDermid syndrome, and intellectual disabilities. There is no charge or co-payment for services provided through the Agency. Requirements

Must be willing to perform essential services before, during, and after an emergency.
Must be able to assist with evacuation of residents during an emergency.
Must be able to work with or around cleaning chemicals and supplies.
Must be able to do repetitive movements with arms, hands, neck and head.
Must be able to lift up to 40lbs with or without accommodation.
Must be able to reach overhead
Must be able to demonstrate competency, as appropriate, in all areas of training, some of which require physical activity such as PASS.
Must be able to bend, twist, turn, kneel, stoop, squat, push, pull, lift and walk extended distances.
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, equipment and materials used in aluminum and steel welding.
Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and equipment used in fabrication of devices using a variety of materials, including wood, plastics, foam, and upholstery.
Knowledge of safety procedures used in welding work
Ability to fabricate special safety devices for construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to utilize proper techniques in preparing items for welding.
Ability to take accurate measurements.
Ability to read and understand electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair 6-, 12-, and 24-volt direct current systems.
Ability to perform Basic PASS techniques.
Ability to accurately read schematic drawings and specifications in construction and modifying a variety of devices.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Skills in the use, repair, and maintenance of welding equipment and tools.
Must be registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS (for male candidates born on or after October 1, 1962).

Responsibilities

From schematics and specifications, works with a variety of materials (including wood, plastics, foam and upholstery) in the construction and modification of various adaptive devices, involving the skilled use of various saws, sanders, sewing machines, and thermoforming equipment.
Repairs, maintains, and performs adjustments on a variety of adaptive devices.
Performs skilled adjustments, repairs, modifications, or construction of and to adaptive/orthotic equipment, evaluates patients’ needs for such devices, and to consult with medical professionals and other staff regarding the adaptive devices.
From schematics and specifications, fabricates, cleans, cuts, and fits custom metal components for adaptive devices, involving the skilled use of saws, grinders, metal lathes, milling machines, and plasma cutters.
Welds components of various metals, involving the skilled use of arc, MIG or welders.
Trouble shoots and repairs 6-,12-, and 24-volt direct current systems. Reads and understands schematics and wiring diagrams.
Maintains and makes minor repairs and adjustments to welding and cutting equipment.
Orders and maintains inventory of welding parts, accessories, and supplies, including rods and gas cylinders.
