About The Position

The University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Solomons, Maryland seeks a multi-trade senior maintenance mechanic in its Maintenance and Facilities department. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing semi-skilled tasks in building construction, building maintenance and preventative maintenance and make repairs; Perform scheduled and unscheduled inspections and repairs of buildings, equipment, roadways and grounds; Assist journey level trades personnel in skilled maintenance and repairs; Ensure operational readiness and safety of equipment; Prepare work summary reports; read write and interpret work orders and reports.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Four years of related work experience
  • Three years of which must have been in the trade area where assigned
  • The ability to exert force up to 70 lbs.
  • Work in, on, over and under mechanical equipment
  • Work at heights up to 35 feet
  • General knowledge of safety practices and procedures related to building maintenance
  • Work in hazardous and confined environments
  • Work during adverse weather and temperature conditions
  • Ability to follow oral and read written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to prepare estimates of time and materials required for assigned work
  • Ability to apply quality and safety standards
  • Ability to complete logs and prepare records and reports
  • Ability to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment or machinery
  • Ability to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.
  • Ability to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment
  • Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment

Nice To Haves

  • A non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license valid in the State of Maryland may be required.
  • Candidates selected for employment may be required to be trained to work with asbestos.
  • Employees in this job class assigned to work with equipment containing CFC refrigerants must achieve and maintain valid certification in accordance with federal law.
