Position Summary The Maintenance Mechanic - Mobile Equipment is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing the full fleet of heavy mobile mining equipment at Mesabi Metallics' open-pit taconite operation in Nashwauk, MN. The fleet includes Komatsu 980E-5 400-ton haul trucks, Komatsu P&H 2800XPB electric rope shovel, PC – 7000 Shovel, Komatsu wheel loaders, drill rigs, dozers, and support vehicles. This role is critical to maximizing equipment availability, minimizing unplanned downtime, and ensuring the mine meets its daily production targets. The Mechanic works closely with the operations team and OEM service representatives in a 24/7 mining environment.

Requirements

  • Proficiency with hydraulic, pneumatic, and power transmission systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment service manuals, hydraulic/electrical schematics, and OEM documentation.
  • Valid driver's license; ability to operate equipment for testing/repositioning purposes.
  • Ability to pass MSHA Part 48 new miner training, pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.
  • Willingness to work rotating 12-hour shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • High school diploma or GED; technical college diploma or certificate in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience diagnosing and repairing heavy diesel-powered mobile equipment (mining, construction, or industrial).

Responsibilities

  • Execute Mesabi Metallics' Preventive Maintenance (PM) program for all mobile equipment per OEM specifications and mine schedules.
  • Perform fluid analysis sampling, oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication services on haul trucks, shovels, drills, and ancillary equipment.
  • Inspect, adjust, and replace wear components: tires (including torque checks on 400-ton truck tire assemblies), brake systems, ground engaging tools, and undercarriage components.
  • Maintain accurate records in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for all work performed, parts used, and equipment condition notes.
  • Diagnose faults and failures across diesel engines, hydraulic circuits, pneumatic systems, power transmission components, and cooling systems.
  • Utilize Komatsu KOMTRAX, PC-based diagnostics (Komatsu PAYLOAD, Komatsu FrontRunner diagnostic tools), and standard OEM workshop tools to identify and resolve fault codes.
  • Perform engine overhauls, hydraulic cylinder rebuilds, transmission servicing, and drivetrain repairs on ultra-class mining trucks.
  • Respond to breakdown calls in the pit and on haul roads, including performing field repairs under adverse conditions and coordinating recovery of disabled equipment.
  • Follow all MSHA Part 56 safety regulations, mine-specific SOPs, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures on all equipment.
  • Conduct and document JSAs (Job Safety Analyses) before beginning high-risk maintenance tasks.
  • Participate in safety meetings, incident investigations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify and report hazardous conditions, near-misses, and equipment deficiencies immediately to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Accurately record parts consumed and coordinate with the parts/warehouse team for component staging and replenishment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area in the mine maintenance shop and in the field.
