About The Position

This position involves the installation, maintenance, and repair of traffic signal control devices and systems throughout the County. This is work approaching the journeyman level in the maintenance, alteration and repair of buildings, machinery and equipment. Work involves the performance of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in one or more of the building trades. Although the employee may approach the journeyman level in one or more trades, the work is not considered to be at the journeyman level in any single task. An employee may specialize in one of the trade options (such as carpentry, electrical, mechanical or plumbing), but assignments will not be restricted to that one trade. Work is performed with general supervision from a trades or administrative superior. Assignments are usually limited in nature and are carried out in accordance with trades standards and applicable regulations. May have contacts with the public, tenants, and public agencies. This is a Classified position, meaning that it is a part of the Howard County Classified Service upon completion of a probationary period of at least six (6) months. Please note that this position falls within a collective bargaining unit and is represented by AFSCME Local 3085, Local 3888, or Local 1810.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of the 12th school grade and 3 years of progressively skilled experience in building/industrial maintenance and repair.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials and tools used in traffic signal control device maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazard and safety precautions applicable to traffic signal maintenance work.
  • CDL Class B license is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Performs electrical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, controls, and devices.
  • Installs, cleans, and adjusts electrical fixtures and components such as ballasts, fuses, and switches.
  • Installs under-floor wiring.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on blades, contactors, circuit breakers, and similar components.
  • Maintenance and replacement of backup power systems and batteries.
  • Performs inspections and cleaning of traffic signal equipment.
  • Checks operation of equipment inside traffic signal cabinets.
  • Replaces lamps in traffic signal heads.
  • Performs overhead sign and signal head installations, removals, and repairs.
  • Responds to reports of malfunctioning signals and other traffic control devices and performs necessary repairs.
  • Operates a bucket truck to conduct overhead traffic signal maintenance.
  • Assists with installation and maintenance of school flashers.
  • Maintenance of hazard indication beacons.
  • Marks underground traffic signal equipment for MISS UTILITY stake-outs.
  • Completes maintenance reports.
  • May supervise a work crew.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
