About The Position

This full-time 40 hours per week position performs advanced-level service, maintenance, repair, and installation of plumbing systems, fixtures, and related mechanical infrastructure throughout the hospital and its satellite facilities. This role ensures the integrity, safety, and compliance of all plumbing systems supporting patient care, critical environments, and facility operations in accordance with local, state, and federal codes, as well as Joint Commission standards.

Requirements

  • Minimum Education High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record required.
  • 2 years service related commercial/industrial/institutional service plumbing experience, or acceptable equivalency determined by Director of Facilities.
  • 2 years Healthcare or hospital facilities maintenance strongly preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • Valid state plumbing or journeyman license preferred.
  • Certified Backflow Tester or Repair Technician desirable.
  • ASSE 6010 or medical gas brazing certification a plus.
  • New Mexico Journeyman Plumber license preferred, not required.

Responsibilities

  • Responds promptly to plumbing-related work orders, emergencies, and service requests throughout patient care areas, laboratories, and support departments.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing systems, including domestic water, sanitary drainage, medical gas piping, and stormwater systems.
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on pumps, valves, water heaters, pressure-reducing stations, backflow prevention assemblies, and fixtures.
  • Troubleshoots complex plumbing issues involving low/high water pressure, flow restrictions, leaks, clogs, or temperature control problems.
  • Conducts testing, documentation, and repairs in support of the facility’s Water Management Plan, including temperature checks, flushing, and disinfecting per ASHRAE 188 and CMS guidelines.
  • Assists with maintenance and inspections of boilers, hydronic heating systems, and domestic hot water systems as directed.
  • Repairs and installs fixtures such as sinks, toilets, showers, water fountains, and sterilizer lines, ensuring medical-grade sanitation and operational safety.
  • Participates in the on-call rotation, responding to urgent after-hours plumbing and all other facility emergencies.
  • Works collaboratively with electricians, HVAC technicians, and carpenters to support multi-trade projects and ensure system continuity.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals to plan and execute work effectively.
  • Maintains accurate records of work performed, materials used, and compliance inspections using the facility’s computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Ensures all work complies with applicable NFPA, OSHA, EPA, and state plumbing codes.
  • Pursues a multidisciplinary role within the department expanding their skill set to that of a Hospital Maintenance Mechanic II.
  • Assists in mentoring junior mechanics and supports departmental safety initiatives.
  • Completes annual education requirements.
  • Assists with orientation of new employees and staff development activities for the department.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned or requested by department leadership.
