About The Position

Reporting to Skagit Valley College's Maintenance Supervisor on the Mount Vernon Campus, the Maintenance Mechanic 4 Electrician maintains and operates electrical plant equipment such as boilers, chillers, pumps, etc., and provides multi-trade support to the Operations and Maintenance Department. The Maintenance Mechanic 4 performs electrical and HVAC work at the journey-level. They are expected to be able to safely install, maintain, and repair equipment and facilities involving HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and other general trades.

Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship as an electrician.
  • Must possess a valid E01 license in Washington State or the ability to obtain one within three (3) months.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license.
  • One (1) year of experience as an expert-level worker in building and equipment maintenance, construction, or repair work.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of WISHA/OSHA regulations related to the electrical trade, the National Electric Code, and local jurisdiction codes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in the utilization of DDC control systems.
  • Knowledge of theory, principles, methods, and techniques used in the installation, repair, and maintenance of electrical and HVAC equipment.
  • Demonstrated computer skills in email, Microsoft Office Suite applications, and work order management systems.
  • Ability to lift heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 100 lbs.
  • Ability to work in, on, around, over, and under fixed equipment and machinery.
  • Ability to work from lifts, ladders, and scaffolding at heights up to 75 feet.
  • Ability to work in hazardous or irritating environments, and adverse weather or temperature conditions.
  • Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to use varying styles, approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding and acceptance of the role of culture in a diverse, multi-cultural workplace.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, schematics, drawings, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Ability to draw and sketch assigned project items when required.
  • Ability to read and understand manufacturers' recommendations regarding scheduled and preventive maintenance, servicing, and operation.
  • Ability to diagnose electrical and HVAC problems, communicate findings, order appropriate parts, and make timely repairs.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional trades experience at the Journeyman's level.
  • Five (5) years at the Journeyman's level in the commercial electrical trade.
  • Experience with a maintenance software work order system.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoots, maintains, and repairs electrical and HVAC components related to existing and new equipment.
  • Maintains current E01 license and stays consistent with updated electrical codes.
  • Independently functions as a fully qualified electrician to perform skilled installation, maintenance, and repair work on low voltage electrical equipment, and electrical systems of 750 volts or less as well as low voltage electrical equipment.
  • Installs, modifies, maintains, and repairs interior and exterior wiring and cables, connections for electric machines, switches and controls, fuse boxes, breaker panels, distribution and instrument panels, buzzer and bell circuits, and hearing and power circuits.
  • Installs, adjusts, maintains, modifies, and repairs electric motors, equipment, and instruments such as pumps, clocks, lamps, X-ray machines, stoves, timers, air conditioners, fans, metering devices, power tools, motors, generators, and refrigerators.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and maintain systems and parts for building automation and fire control/reporting.
  • Inspect electric systems and equipment to detect and correct faulty or worn-out parts.
  • Inspect electrical systems, check wires, poles, transformers, and keep lines cleared of tree limbs and brush.
  • Perform alterations, adjustments, modifications, repairs, and installation of electrical equipment systems.
  • Estimate materials and time needed to complete jobs.
  • Perform preventative and routine corrective maintenance tasks, ensuring that assigned systems, equipment, and facilities are maintained in a safe manner and ensure minimal breakdown.
  • Serve as the electrical lead for the maintenance department.
  • Provides routine multi-trade skills related to plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, metal fabrication, general repairs, and plant operations.
  • Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications for construction or remodeling, and may recommend appropriate modifications or additions to plans.
  • Install, diagnose problems, and repair electrical and HVAC systems, apparatus, electrical, and electronic components of industrial machinery and equipment following electrical code, manuals, schematic diagrams, blueprints, and other specifications.
  • Perform maintenance and repairs to electrical and HVAC equipment, including motors, pumps, control systems, chillers, and boilers.
  • Prepare estimates of time, labor, and materials for projects and/or repairs.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment of the trades.
  • Cleans work area upon completion of project.
  • Provide guidance and training in electrical and HVAC work to other maintenance personnel.
  • May have led responsibility for special projects.
  • Perform all work in accordance with all established safety standards (such as WISHA/OSHA lockout/tagout).
  • Serve as on-call maintenance technician as scheduled and respond to maintenance emergencies.
  • Use equipment such as lifts to complete projects.
  • Serve as essential personnel and report to work during college emergencies and inclement weather.
  • Drives service vehicles as required; loads and unloads materials and supplies.
  • May direct and instruct helpers.
  • Utilize a software-based work order management system to organize, plan, and execute workload.
  • Frequently interact and communicate through multimodal pathways such as email, phone, and in person with customers, students, staff, and the general public.
  • Plan and procure goods and materials to complete jobs and projects in a timely manner.
  • Report emergencies and other urgent issues to Security and the Assistant Director.
  • Other duties as assigned.
