About The Position

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Facilities Program is seeking a Maintenance Mechanic to join their team. This position is crucial for maintaining the Department’s compound in Tumwater and other sites in the Thurston County area, serving as part of a maintenance team that supports the state's primary logistics hub. The ideal candidate will possess common sense, critical thinking, the ability to balance schedules and priorities across multiple tasks, and account for varying site conditions. A strong sense of judgment and working knowledge of facility maintenance, construction, and small equipment operation principles are essential. This role requires clear communication, attention to detail, and teamwork.

Requirements

One year of experience as a journey-level worker in building and facilities maintenance, construction and/or repair work.
Basic understanding of Washington State Building Codes (SBC) and other applicable federal, state, and local codes, regulations, and guidelines, to include ADA, OSHA, WISHA, and L&I regulations.
Experience working as part of a team.
Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
Professionalism and integrity.
Accustomed to evaluating maintenance needs and preparing accurate estimates of labor and materials needed.
Accustomed to interpreting construction-related drawings, plans, technical specifications, and documents relating to facilities maintenance and construction activities.
Must have, maintain, and be able to apply a high level of knowledge relating to construction means and methods.
Competency and knowledge of computer software to include Microsoft Word and Outlook, web-based programs, and facility management software and applications.

Perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations, and public records retention, and requests are followed.
Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
Ability to travel around the state with some overnight stays.
A current, valid driver’s license and two years of driving experience.
DNR requires state drivers to possess a license that is not suspended, revoked, or restricted (for example, Occupational/Restricted Driver Licenses or requiring ignition interlock devices).
This position requires driving as an essential function.

Nice To Haves

Experience in Hazardous Waste Management and completion of a recognized apprenticeship.
Basic knowledge gained from experience with common governmental contracting and procurement methods, including public works.

Responsibilities

Perform a variety of skilled/journey level building and grounds maintenance and repair work.
Operate hand tools, power tools, vehicles, tractors, and other common facility maintenance equipment.
Use the agency’s facility management/work order system to input details regarding work needed and performed, and to manage facilities work planning, assigning, and monitoring of other pertinent facility-related activities.
Develop solutions to address repair and maintenance problems.
Supports contracted activities on DNR sites, providing oversight and review.
Enforces safety compliance, inspects contracted/vendor work, monitors progress, and completed work.
