About The Position

The Washington State Department of Corrections is seeking a safety-first individual to join the Reynolds Reentry Center in the vital role of Maintenance Mechanic. The goal of the Maintenance Mechanic is to perform journey-level maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction work across a variety of building systems, facilities, and grounds at the Reentry Center. The Maintenance Mechanic works independently while applying expertise across multiple skilled trades to ensure the facility remains safe, functional, and well maintained. This includes maintaining and repairing building structures, roofing, walkways, driveways, roads, concrete and masonry, painting, cabinetry, furniture, HVAC and refrigeration systems, vehicles, and mechanical equipment. The position utilizes knowledge and skills in multiple trades, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, and general mechanical repair, to diagnose and resolve maintenance issues while completing preventative maintenance and responding to facility repair needs. In addition to maintenance responsibilities, the Maintenance Mechanic provides oversight and direction to assigned individuals performing light maintenance tasks such as painting, floor refinishing, landscaping, and general facility upkeep. The position promotes a safe, clean, and functional environment for residents, staff, and visitors while ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards. This position is essential to maintaining comfortable living conditions for residents and safe working conditions for staff. By ensuring the facility operates efficiently and reliably, the Maintenance Mechanic directly supports the Reentry Center’s mission of helping individuals successfully transition back into the community. Through maintaining the physical environment and mentoring assigned individuals in basic maintenance tasks, this role contributes to positive life changes, successful reentry outcomes, and enhanced public safety.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED
A valid driver's license
Four years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work or completion of a recognized apprenticeship in a skilled mechanic trade

Responsibilities

Performing skilled work in a number of trades fields including but not limited to carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, equipment maintenance/repair, masonry and painting which could look like: Maintaining, constructing, altering and repairing building structures, roofs, driveways, walkways, roads, concrete/masonry, painting, doors, walls, windows, drains, flooring, plumbing, fencing, furniture, cabinets, HVAC and refrigeration systems, vehicles and facility grounds
Coordinating projects with Construction Maintenance Project Supervisor and/or other facility staff
Operating hand tools, power tools and other shop equipment, operating grounds equipment, vehicles and various other maintenance related machinery
Installing, maintaining and repairing electrical connections, switches, circuits, electrical equipment, thermostats, and valves
Initiating requests for materials, supplies and equipment
Performing preventative maintenance and repairs on all types of mechanical equipment, vehicles, drive motors, laundry, kitchen; changes oil, greases, changing or cleaning filters, drive belts, sprockets, shafts and bearings to ensure proper operation
Estimating, planning, and ordering inventory, parts and supplies needed for projects as well as routine tasks. Consult with supervisor, vendors and/or others as required
Providing oversight, direction, and guidance to assigned to incarcerated individuals performing light facility maintenance duties
Assuming responsibility for Monthly Safety & Sanitization Equipment Inspections, correcting any deficiencies and reporting hazards and/or non-functioning safety equipment
Participating in Monthly and Quarterly Safety Meetings
