About The Position

UW Facilities Maintenance & Construction has an outstanding opportunity for a Maintenance Mechanic I. This position is based at the Health Science Building on the Seattle campus and is not eligible for telework. Reporting to the Maintenance Supervisor II, the Maintenance Mechanic 1 (MM1) performs entry-level maintenance support work across University facilities. The MM1 assists journey-level trades personnel with preventive maintenance, repairs, installations, and renovations, including routine HVAC support such as changing air filters. This position operates tools, equipment, and University vehicles, assists with material handling and worksite cleanup, and supports the safe, efficient operation of campus buildings while maintaining high standards of safety, teamwork, and customer service.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or GED equivalent; OR, six month's full-time related vocational study or training; OR, six months' applicable work experience; AND, one year's full-time experience as a helper in building and equipment maintenance, construction, repair work, or equivalent.
  • Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge and practical experience with WISHA (Washington Industrial Safety & Health Act) and OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Act) regulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with standard productivity software including Microsoft Office Suite or equivalent products.
  • Demonstrated successful ability in taking direction, working well with others and as a member of a team.
  • Demonstrated excellent effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • Ability to lift and move heavy material may be required.
  • Must be able to be fitted for and wear a respirator on the job.
  • Must participate in medical screening/monitoring (such as TB screening and proof of measles inoculation) required for work assignments in locations, including but not limited to, nonhuman primate areas, the Animal Research and Care Facility, and the University of Washington Medical Center.

Responsibilities

  • Assist journey-level trades workers with carpentry, painting, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and related maintenance tasks.
  • Support fabrication and installation of equipment and materials to meet project requirements.
  • Operate power tools, equipment, and perform worksite cleanup following project completion.
  • Operate University vehicles to transport tools, equipment, and materials to job sites.
  • Load, unload, and move materials and supplies as needed for maintenance projects.
  • Keep leads and supervisors informed of work progress, project status, and material or equipment needs.
  • Coordinate with other Maintenance & Construction (M&C) shops to support project completion.
  • Provide professional, courteous, and responsive customer service to clients, colleagues, and the campus community.
  • Follow all safety regulations, SDS requirements, Hazard Review Checklists, and PPE standards.
  • Comply with UW Facilities policies, procedures, and M&C protocols, including Individual Accountability Protocols (IAP).
  • Participate in training, process improvement initiatives, employee engagement efforts, and support M&C goals, values, and management directives.
