About The Position

The Department of Enterprise Services (DES) provides centralized business services to state government agencies, other public entities, and Washington residents. The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and DES-managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates, and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks, and a 260-acre lake. As a Maintenance Mechanic 1, you will play a vital role in the care and upkeep of the historic Capitol Campus grounds and other designated Thurston County locations in primary support of the Grounds Shop. In this hands-on position, you will maintain assigned grounds areas by safely operating a variety of hand and power tools, as well as large-scale truck mowers and specialized landscaping equipment. Adherence to basic safety rules and practices, including wearing high-visibility safety vests, is essential as you work to keep our public spaces beautiful, safe, and well-maintained.

Requirements

High school graduate or GED
Two (2) years of work experience in construction, building and equipment maintenance, or repair work.
Ability to lift or move fifty (50) lbs.
Valid driver's license.
Agreement to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Operators License within six (6) months of employment from the Department of Agriculture.
Agreement to obtain and maintain a Flagger certification within one (1) year of employment.
Participation in the DES Respiratory Protection Program.
Ability to read and write, and to understand and carry out instructions.

Responsibilities

Supports the Grounds Shop by maintaining and repairing Capitol Campus and park buildings, grounds, and signage.
Performs minor carpentry, concrete, and fencing work, including the installation and repair of tables and benches.
Assists skilled trades technicians with painting, plumbing, mechanical, and minor electrical projects.
Operates grounds equipment and trailers to safely transport materials, supplies, and heavy machinery.
Installs, maintains, repairs, and maps campus irrigation systems, including clocks, mainlines, and sprinklers.
Maintains, mows, seeds, and fertilizes campus lawns, shrub beds, and annual flower displays, including diagnosing and treating plant diseases and pests.
Performs landscape and hardscape installations while safely operating equipment ranging from weed eaters and chainsaws to tractors, street sweepers, and snowplows.
Cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to all hand tools, power tools, and motorized vehicles used on the job.
Other duties as needed.
