About The Position

The Department of Enterprise Services (DES) provides centralized business services to state government agencies, other public entities, and Washington residents. The Buildings & Grounds Division (B&G) is responsible for the Capitol Campus and DES-managed building operations, stewardship, and historic preservation. B&G provides service to over 42 agencies, maintains, operates, and preserves the 486-acre state Capitol Campus in Olympia, including more than 28 buildings, 18 public monuments, over 6,000 parking stalls, four state parks, and a 260-acre lake. As a Maintenance Mechanic 1, you will play a vital role in the care and upkeep of the historic Capitol Campus grounds and other designated Thurston County locations in primary support of the Grounds Shop. In this hands-on position, you will maintain assigned grounds areas by safely operating a variety of hand and power tools, as well as large-scale truck mowers and specialized landscaping equipment. Adherence to basic safety rules and practices, including wearing high-visibility safety vests, is essential as you work to keep our public spaces beautiful, safe, and well-maintained.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED
  • Two (2) years of work experience in construction, building and equipment maintenance, or repair work.
  • Ability to lift or move fifty (50) lbs.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Agreement to obtain and maintain a Pesticide Operators License within six (6) months of employment from the Department of Agriculture.
  • Agreement to obtain and maintain a Flagger certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Participation in the DES Respiratory Protection Program.
  • Ability to read and write, and to understand and carry out instructions.

Responsibilities

  • Supports the Grounds Shop by maintaining and repairing Capitol Campus and park buildings, grounds, and signage.
  • Performs minor carpentry, concrete, and fencing work, including the installation and repair of tables and benches.
  • Assists skilled trades technicians with painting, plumbing, mechanical, and minor electrical projects.
  • Operates grounds equipment and trailers to safely transport materials, supplies, and heavy machinery.
  • Installs, maintains, repairs, and maps campus irrigation systems, including clocks, mainlines, and sprinklers.
  • Maintains, mows, seeds, and fertilizes campus lawns, shrub beds, and annual flower displays, including diagnosing and treating plant diseases and pests.
  • Performs landscape and hardscape installations while safely operating equipment ranging from weed eaters and chainsaws to tractors, street sweepers, and snowplows.
  • Cleans, services, and makes minor repairs to all hand tools, power tools, and motorized vehicles used on the job.
  • Other duties as needed.
