About The Position

The primary purpose of this position is to repair and maintain the operation of steam, hot water, and cooling water distribution equipment in accordance with HABC policies, City Code Standards, HUD guidelines, and requirements. All activities must support the Housing Authority of Baltimore City (“HABC” or “Authority”) mission, strategic goals, and objectives.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, GED, or vocational school equivalent required, and a minimum of 1year of general experience in steam, hot water, and cooling water distribution maintenance and repair.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Applicants for this position shall possess at least ONE of the following qualifications:
  • One year of documented experience as an active steam, hydronic, and cooling distribution maintenance under a second or third grade engineer, or one year of experience as a Maintenance Worker Level IV at Housing Authority of Baltimore City.
  • 6 credit hours or continuing education units of classes in boiler operations or safety, and verification of work experience.
  • Possession of a valid Maryland driver's license.
  • Must be able to be covered under the Authority's vehicle insurance policy.
  • Availability to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Successful completion of a prescreening investigation, including verification of employment history and education credentials.
  • A 6-month probationary period applies to this full-time permanent position.

Nice To Haves

  • Must obtain a Second Grade Stationary Engineer License within 18 months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and maintains the operation of steam, hot water, and cooling water distribution equipment.
  • Performs a wide range of repairs on defective equipment and components, including recommending, developing, and performing preventative maintenance on equipment and physical plants.
  • Complies with all applicable standards and procedures, including safety procedures in the operation of equipment, boiler rooms, and distribution systems, and maintains a clean work area.
  • Inspects, repairs, adjusts, insulates, and installs auxiliary equipment, water, fuel, heating, cooling pipes, controls, and heating and cooling distribution equipment in all areas where equipment and distribution systems are located, tests systems for malfunctions, and performs repairs.
  • Monitors and inspects heating and cooling systems to ensure continued proper operation.
  • Keeps and maintains accurate records.
  • Assists with related and other work in coordination with site maintenance staff and contractors.
  • Trains and teaches site maintenance staff in maintenance procedures that support heating and cooling distribution.
  • Available on-call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to perform work as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
