About The Position

To provide maintenance/janitorial services to the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa’s tribal buildings. These duties include custodial services, grounds maintenance, and preventative and corrective maintenance functions to be performed as needed. This is a full-time job and could be a split shift position during regular ECC school year, inclement weather or temporary fill in.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must demonstrate ability to use maintenance equipment such as floor buffer, carpet shampooer, drill, etc.
  • Must pass a background and fingerprint check prior to hire and every year thereafter.
  • Must obtain physical exam and obtain required vaccines (or obtain exemption).
  • Must be able to do manual labor and lift objects of at least 50 pounds.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Valid driver’s license and at least liability insurance required.

Nice To Haves

  • General knowledge of cleaning and maintenance of facilities preferred.
  • Knowledge of safety practices with use of cleaning supplies and lawn and snow removal equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of lawn and snow removal equipment for maintenance purposes preferred.
  • Knowledge of year-round building and ground maintenance preferred.
  • High School diploma or GED preferred.
  • Previous work experience as janitor, custodian, or maintenance, preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Work as part of a team and take direction.
  • Assist in maintaining all aspects of tribal properties, including, but not limited to: grounds, sidewalks, parking lots, common areas, exterior and interior of buildings, and all department mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs as assigned, including caulking, minor electrical, unclogging sinks and toilets, faucet repair and replacement, wall prep/patching, painting, and appliance repair.
  • Assist with electrical, heating and plumbing repairs, such as replacing light fixtures, receptacles, troubleshooting HVAC repairs and replacing sink traps and drains.
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms, including toilets, sinks, mirrors, floors, and dispensers; check and fill paper products; and empty garbage and assist with recycling.
  • Clean kitchen floors and empty garbage.
  • Vacuum carpet and rug areas, sweep and mop floors, and empty garbage in classrooms, offices, and hallways.
  • Perform snow/ice removal prior to staff and children arrival and as needed, including shoveling off roofs when needed.
  • Mow grass, perform weeding (manual or with weed eater), and general upkeep outdoors.
  • Lock janitors closets when not in use, ensure proper storage of chemicals, perform general maintenance of AC & furnace units, strip and wax floors as needed, maintain building safety checklist, shampoo carpets and rugs as needed, disinfect doorknobs, spot check windows daily, and perform year-round grounds and facilities maintenance.
  • Keep all maintenance logs up to date.
  • Maintain an organized, clean and safe work environment, using only approved chemicals and keeping them locked away when not in use.
  • Pick up packages and other large items as needed.
  • Provide a deep clean of facilities when staff, community members, and children are not present or more often as requested.
  • Complete minor tasks including hanging cabinets/shelves, minor repairs to plumbing or other fixtures, putting together desks or other furniture, and assisting staff with office and classroom needs in relation to maintenance.
  • Assist in ordering cleaning and other supplies through the Public Works department.
  • Perform grounds keeping duties, e.g., lawn mowing, weeding, snow removal, and remove snow from roofs as necessary.
  • Ensure snow removal in parking lots and sidewalks is done prior to staff and children arriving each day.
  • Attend appropriate staff meetings.
