About The Position

The Yakima-Tieton Irrigation District is seeking a Maintenance Crew Member to perform duties in various maintenance programs including Main Canal maintenance, cathodic protection system monitoring, backup equipment operation, and timer turnout maintenance and operation. This role involves performing maintenance duties as directed by supervisory staff and working within the Laborers’ International #348 bargaining unit, potentially in all labor classes as needed. The position requires familiarity with district facilities, vehicle and equipment upkeep, and safe operating practices. The Maintenance Crew Member must work effectively within the chain of command, adhere to safety rules, use proper PPE, and understand relevant policies and procedures for pipe cutting, tool usage, and different types of pipe and fittings. This role also involves learning all aspects of Facilities maintenance and Main Canal maintenance, including associated hazards. Other duties as assigned will also be part of this role.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency (GED)
  • Two years of experience in repair and maintenance of irrigation, plumbing or electrical equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
  • Knowledge of water pipe engineering theory and practice
  • Knowledge of equipment testing methods and electrical theory
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools used in irrigation
  • Ability to interpret survey map and GIS and find your way around the District
  • Knowledge of safety precautions related to hazardous materials
  • Knowledge of proper loading, hauling, towing and tie-down practices
  • Basic math skills
  • Knowledge of basic federal, state and local codes and regulations
  • Skill in operating and maintaining maintenance equipment
  • Skill in performing preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Skill in troubleshooting, diagnosing and identifying resolutions to complex irrigation maintenance problems
  • Skill in using a computer, electrical and electronic testing equipment and devices
  • Skill in applying traffic control techniques
  • Skill in using two-way radios
  • Basic organizational and inventory skills

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties in Main Canal maintenance, cathodic protection system monitoring, backup equipment operation, and timer turnout maintenance and operation.
  • Perform maintenance duties as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor, Technical Supervisor or other supervisory staff.
  • Have a familiarity of the Headquarters facilities including the office, shops, parking areas and storage buildings.
  • Have a knowledge of vehicle and equipment upkeep and safe operating practices.
  • Work well with the chain of command and understand the flow of information.
  • Follow proper shoveling techniques.
  • Be safe and observant when working in or near an excavation and follow all safety rules use proper PPE.
  • Know AC pipe cutting policy and procedure.
  • Understand the proper use of all hand and power tools.
  • Understand the different types of pipe and fittings and how they are applied.
  • Have a working knowledge of different turnout types.
  • Learn all aspects of Facilities maintenance and the Main Canal maintenance and hazards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
