About The Position

The Maintenance/Construction Technician IV works at the Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center, which houses regulatory laboratories for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, including a Bio-Safety Level 3 laboratory. The position supervises technicians, performs highly skilled maintenance work, and uses initiative and judgment to troubleshoot complex systems. It ensures the performance and maintenance of physical plant operations, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general construction. The role also coordinates subcontractors during repairs and improvement projects. Work may occasionally take place in areas containing necropsies or animal carcasses, biological materials, and incineration systems. Appropriate safety training and personal protective equipment are provided. The Facility Maintenance team also serves three satellite laboratories in Monroe, Elkin, and Fletcher, typically through monthly day trips. Overnight travel around the state may be required, and occasional after-hours work at the Raleigh location is required. The employee must be able to arrive at the Agricultural Sciences Center within 60 minutes.

Requirements

High school diploma or GED and two years of experience performing journey-level tasks in two or more highly complex mechanical or building trades, such as HVAC, plumbing, or electrical; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working knowledge of building codes, blueprints, and building automation control systems.
Ability to anticipate downstream impacts of mechanical systems to maintain continuous laboratory operations.
Ability to direct and supervise maintenance technicians and contractors.
Must have or obtain a pesticides applicator’s license within the first year of employment.
Must possess or be able to obtain a valid North Carolina driver’s license within 30 days.
Must be able to arrive at the Agricultural Sciences Center within 60 minutes.
May require current EPA Type I, II, III, or Universal technician certification under Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.

Responsibilities

Supervise maintenance technicians and provide direction for their work.
Perform highly skilled maintenance work and troubleshoot complex systems.
Maintain and ensure proper performance of high-pressure steam boilers, hot-water boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and incinerators.
Maintain HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general construction.
Coordinate subcontractors during repairs and improvement projects.
Travel to satellite laboratories, typically once per month for day trips.
Perform occasional after-hours work at the Raleigh location.
