Maintenance/Construction Tech IV (Temporary)
About The Position
This is a temporary position with the NC Dept of Agriculture – Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center. Temporary employees are not offered leave or retirement benefits, but may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) if they work an average of 30 or more hours per week. This role provides valuable experience for those seeking permanent employment with the state, offering exposure to the agency's culture, processes, and procedures. The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center houses regulatory laboratories for the Department of Agriculture, including the Food & Drug Protection Division labs, the Animal Disease Diagnostic lab, and the Standards Division labs. The facility also includes a Bio-Safety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory. This position is crucial for ensuring the proper performance and maintenance of the facility's physical plant operations, including boilers, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general construction.
Requirements
- High school or General Educational Development diploma and two (2) years of experience in the performance of the full range of journey level tasks associated with two (2) or more highly complex mechanical or building trades; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A valid North Carolina driver’s license
Nice To Haves
- Working knowledge of building codes, blueprints and building automation control systems
- Ability to understand downstream impacts of mechanical systems to maintain continuous lab operations.
- May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I. II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
- Must either have, or obtain within the first 1 year of employment, a pesticides applicator’s license.
- Must be able to arrive at the ASC facility within 60 minutes
Responsibilities
- Ensures proper performance and maintenance of physical plant operations (high pressure steam boilers, hot water boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and incinerators), HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general construction.
